After seeing all the $300-400 laptops during Black Friday, I am in the buying mode and will buy my first laptop.

What is a good one to buy for

for what you use, any computer should be fine. if you want to watch DVDs, get one with a dvd drive. anything with more than 512 MB of memory and 40 GB of hard drive space should be fine for you.

I think tomorrow Office Max (I think it's that store, but it might be Office Depot) will have a $399 laptop, but they nickel and dime you for the extras:

$25 wireless NIC (comes with wired NIC)
$50 DVD/CDRW drive (comes with DVD-ROM drive only)
$75 512MB RAM total upgrade (you get another 256MB RAM)

    I think it's a Celeron-based 1.3GHZ, 256MB RAM, 40GB hard drive laptop.

The manufacturer is either Acer or Compaq (I can't quite recall after sneaking a peek at the circulars at the grocery store tonight)

Keep an eye on Dell through the HTF Deals page, they've been offering some good basic laptops for under $500 recently which will do everything you're asking.
