Hi Everyone,
Well, I have joined legions of Americans who are being bumped out of a job due to the economy and the recent attacks.
I hope this isn't an inappropriate venue, but if anyone around here lives in Charlotte and knows of any good job tips, it would be much appreciated. After all, I gotta keep a roof over my head and keep up my DVD addiction. :)
Thanks, and God bless if this has happened to you as well.

Sorry to hear of your job loss Will,
I am being layed off also on Dec. 14Th. Luckily I have advanced notice since they are laying off so many at Boeing.
I am going to live off unemployement insurance for a while and go to school for something? Have no clue what yet. I am open to advice from the forum also.
Kevin C. :)

I'll be joining Will & Kevin in a week. Nov. 1 is my last day as I'm also being laid off. Although I've had a little advance notice, I haven't found anything else in the Baltimore area yet.
That being said, keep your spirits up! Things will turn around, and hopefully we'll all find jobs that we'll enjoy more than the ones we lost!
In the meantime, I might stand on the street corner holding a sign that says "Support OAR DVDs"...
Will, what kind of work do you do? I have some family living in Charlotte; my uncle and cousin-in-law both work for First Union. If you want, I'd be happy to put in a word for you or forward your resume if it makes sense based on your qualifications and interests; just let me know.
Regards,

Keep up your hopes. I recommend temping. 2 of the 3 places I temped at wanted to keep me, and I got hired yesterday full time by one of them. Don't give up but try to enjoy the time off.

Will, what kind of work do you do?
Well, let's see. For the most part, I've done mostly administrative work. Lots of experience in MS Office related stuff, particularly Excel, Word, the typical. I've done some scheduling with TCS software. Boring stuff, but I guess it pays the bills. Computer stuff is not an issue with me. I tend to pick things up pretty quickly. I'm decent at graphics, though not a whiz by any means. I've run a movie theater before(but the hours and the pay sucks). My dream job would be either to be out making horror films or designing DVD's, but since there's probably zero call for that in Charlotte, I'd better stick to reality for the time being. :)
Thanks for the interest. I hope everyone is doing well in their search.

Will,
Sorry to hear you've been laid off. I'm actually looking to move out to LA so I have my resume up on all the online sites. Within a few days of posting my resume online, I got calls from a bunch of headhunters in the Charlotte area trying to get me to interview with Charlotte area companies. I turned them all down because I don't want a different job 'round these parts. If you haven't done so already, it's probably a good idea to get your resume out on places like monster.com and dice.com and such. Also call some headhunter agencies and get your resume out with them. I'm looking for a software/internet development job by the way.
Good Luck!
Gregory

The engineering company that I have worked for the past 4 plus years is closing at the end of November. It's gonna be a busy month...selling off the assets, paying off liabilities and completing the remaining current projects. Not a big surprise, it's been heading in that direction for some time. I was hoping that we would at least be around until the end of December. All well.

I just got the word today myself. Company is blaming 9/11 but you have to wonder (consumer electronics).
Officially end at the end of November. Things sure are getting tough out there. Not sure what to do just yet, but I'm hopeful. This first day has been waves of confidence and fear. My 2nd layoff in 4 years and I survived a third.
Is it too much to just want a steady paycheck these days (don't answer that)?
EE and CS are just getting kicked all over the place it seems.

I'm sorry to hear about all those who are getting laid off. Hopefully things will turn around quickly for those affected by this economic turn down.
Just as a side rant, I know the business reasons for letting go of people at the end of the year but it certainly would be easier if they could do these things after the holidays.
Good luck to all.

Sorry to hear about the new layoffs. The only advice I can give people is to keep their head up and just keep sending out resumes. I've been out of work for 2 months and just got a new job this week. Of course I had to take a pay cut but it wasn't too severe and I'm just happy to have a job again.
