I agree with Lanie in regards to the anthem but...the slipping part, fuggedaboutit. That is the funniest [email protected] I've seen in a while. I could watch it endlessly

I don't find it funny... I'm mortified for the poor girl.

    {up onto soapbox}

I'm sure we've all been in situations where we feel microscopic as a result of our nerves, circumstances, or just dumb luck. To have those situations nationally broadcast, and then exploited by the media for cheap laughs (at the expense of the individual) is pretty low.

I'm sure she needs a hug right now. And probably a lot of support because of the amount of negative scrutiny & attention this poor girl has gotten.

    {off soapbox}

    Moe.

Yeah, this is one of those moments where you just wish the Earth would open up and swallow you - which it hardly ever does when you really want it to.

At least before the internet this sort of thing only humiliated you in front of the few hundred or few thousand people who actually attended the event, plus the tens of thousands who watched the live local broadcast, and maybe the local news. Within 48 hours it would be pretty much over. Now thanks to video capture cards and the internet, millions (billions?) of people will chuckling over your foolishness for years, maybe decades, to come.

And that's just what happens in public events. Forget about what are intended as private moments that get out "into the wild" Everyone from Pam Anderson to that "Star Wars" kid could tell you about that. [IMG]

That's why I try to keep all my stupidity rigorously low-tech, and why I absolutely refuse to own a video camera of any kind. [IMG]

    Regards,

    Joe

    (P.S., to the Ladies:

Nothing good has ever come of letting your husband/boyfriend/significant other take pictures and/or video tape of you naked and/or engaged in sexual activity. There is essentially no upside to this kind of activity - how many times are you really going to watch it? And the downside is pretty much unlimited - from a friend or family member watching a tape carelessly left in the VCR, to the wrong tape being returned to Blockbuster to your having a messy divorce/break-up/hiring the wrong carpenter and having your butt become the most downloaded object on the internet before - if you happen to be a celebrity - it turns up on as a DVD on the inevitable late-night infomercial. Just a word to the wise... [IMG])

I sympathize with the girl, but don't know how singing the anthem on GMA is redeeming. What does it prove -- that she can sing the song? (Which would have been the expectation going into the hockey game.) I think this does nothing positive for her. Hell, I didn't even hear about the incident until now.

She should have saved her re-try for an actual sporting event.

While I do feel sorry for her, it goes to show that if you are doing anything in the public spotlight, you better have your "ducks in a row" before you begin... And I'm not talkin' the Mighty Ducks !

If she plays her cards right, she'll be collecting some $$$ off this as the next "Need to get Away ?" commercial for Southwest.

It really isn't that embarrassing, but the slip is funny. Anyway, how many Americans can sing the Canadian national anthem?

    O Canada,
    Our home and native land;
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free.

    From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

This just means that I have been to far too many hockey games (where I've never heard the lyrics botched). But I admit that I can't do it in French.

But can you do it half French/half English like they do in Montreal?[IMG]

    O Canada!

O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
    Il sait porter la croix!

    Ton histoire est une épopée
    Des plus brillants exploits.

Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Commonly heard at hockey games. So if you Americans don't want to learn all of it, just mumble the first part and learn the last part. No one will know the difference and everyone gets to participate! [IMG]

Now all that's missing is hockey. The town has been awfully quiet since the lock-out. [IMG]

What have I started? Sorry to bring up the memories of a dead sport.

When are they going to add "God bless TSN" to the anthem?

Whenever I need a hockey fix, that's the place I go. NFL draft? Bleh, lets talk about Bertuzzi being able to play agin! That is if the NHL ever comes off hiatus!

Now just imagine if she had to sing all 4 verses. I can't even sing the other 3 with the words in front of me [IMG]

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thru the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
    'Tis the star-spangled banner!
    Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out of their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave'
From the terror of flight and the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
    And this be our motto:
    "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Bravo, Kirk! I think this would be a GREAT way for her to be able to laugh it off. I wonder if any Southwest employees read HTF threads? Would they be willing to give you any royalties for suggesting this? [IMG]

I have a Canadian friend who expressed wonder at the American obsession with our national anthem; that is the argument over "bombs bursting in air" being warmongering, the "America the Beautiful vs. Star Spangled Banner" stuff, etc., by saying "Jeez, what's the big deal? We Canadians have 2 national anthems and none of us know the words to either." [IMG]

P.S., I happen to think the Canadian anthem is quite nice and much easier to sing than the SSB (we who follow Boston Bruins hockey know how to sing it well, as you probably know).

Just tell your Canadian friend that our national anthem is a poem written in the civil war about the flag over a Fort (sumpter I believe) still being there the next day after a night of bombardment by cannon and mortars with exploding shells (bombs bursting in air) and crude explosive rockets, they looked like huge versions of the fireworks rockets we buy today with less accuracy

then someone set the poem to an english drinking song that was popular at the time
