I bought a Blu-ray in the UK a couple of years ago after seeing a TV doc about Edith Piaf. It looked great, but the English subtitles were thick & very bright, & as the film looks quite dark sometimes (but always very nice) the subs just took over & I found it unwatchable in the end, & got rid of the disc. I’m assuming that Warners subs are more sympathetic.

They are. They're always easy to read but do not take over the frame in any meaningful way.
