Well, we know Ikiru is on the way. Most likely, The Lower Depths will come shortly thereafter. But what else?

The Digital Bits is reporting that several more are in the pipeline for 2004. I'm guessing the titles that recently toured around the country in Cowboy Pictures' retrospective will be released, such as Stray Dog, I Live in Fear, and others.

Are we going to see anamorphic versions of Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and a two disc of Seven Samurai (new prints of these also toured)?

I've heard many of these new prints have somewhat questionable subtitles by Linda Hoaglund--they contain too much slang. Hopefully, we will get Donald Richie's translations, a la Throne of Blood.

Speculations? It sounds like 2004 is going to be a great year.

Just about every remaining Kurosawa film has been rumored for imminent release by Criterion. I'm taking a "I'll believe it when I see it on their website" stance.

They're working on a lot of Kurosawa titles, but we've been told that it's just slow going.

I'm eagerly waiting for Dodes'kaden and there's no way I'm buying the Mei Ah edition! [IMG]

I rented a Criterion DVD of Sanjuro and it was anamorphic.

I have heard rumors that Kagemusha which belongs to Fox has been somehow licensed to Criterion in some sort of exchange - I don't know if there is any truth to that, but I could see where Criterion would love to have a crack at it. As far as 2004 discs from Kurosawa, I kind of like it when they spread them out - I will be kind of bummed when they are all released, as there won't be the anticipation of an upcoming release.

IIRC, about a year ago we got info that Criterion was working on a ton of Kurosawa films, and that list included:

    The Bad Sleep Well
    Dodes'ka-den
    Drunken Angel
    I Live in Fear
    Ikiru (now announced for 1/04)
The Lower Depths (was scheduled to be released 8/03, but delayed because of the finding of better elements, TBA 04)
Seven Samurai (remastered reissue, similar to their re-release of Beauty and the Beast and The 400 Blows)
    Stray Dog
    Throne of Blood (released 5/03)

I can understand it going slowly. Many of the elements for Kurosawa's films are in extremely rough condition, and I'm glad Criterion are spending the time to make each one look and sound as good as it can.

I'm not sure The Lower Depths was delayed because better elements were found - Jon Mulvaney said it was to "add content" to the release. Whether this means more extras or, as some have hoped and speculated, that they've decided to pair it up in a 2-disc set with Jean Renoir's earlier adaptation of the same play (like The Killers) remains to be seen.

You're right - I got the reason mixed up with Rules of the Game, which was because of the source materials.

In either case, it's delayed until 2004.

Does anyone know if there are even as much as rumors of either Criterion getting their hands on Dersu Uzala, or if we can ever expect a better transfer than what we currently have from Image/Kino?

    Please?!

I'd love to see Criterion do Kagemusha. It was screening here a couple of months ago and I actually walked out of the theater because the print was so horrific and the audience was laughing at the Japanese stylized acting.

Doesn't Criterion (through Janus) have the distribution rights to all pre-Dersu Uzala Kurosawas?

^ Yes, they have that option. Except I think those rights only go through Red Beard, and that Dodes-ka'den is through a different agreement.
