Received a 2004 catalog from Kino today. The cover announces 'Krzysztof Kieslowski: 6 Films New to DVD' & a Deluxe 4 DVD set of Marcel Pagnol's Fanny trilogy. No specific street dates given.

    The Hi-lites:

    Kieslowski-'Extraordinary DVD Extras
include new interviews with those who worked closely with Kieslowski: Agnieszka Holland (director), Annette Insdorf (translator), Slavomir Idziak (cinematographer), Grazyna Szapolowska (actress). Short films made by Kieslowski at Lodz Film School.'

    Titles:

A Short Film About Love 1988
A Short Film About Killing 1988
    Blind Chance 1981
    No End 1984
    Camera Buff 1979
    The Scar 1976

    SRP $29.95 each

    The Pagnof set includes

    Marius 1931
    Fanny 1932
    Cesar 1936

& a 'Bonus Disc of Fabulous DVD Extras includes:
70 min. of Filmed interviews. Original Posters. Gallery of stills and Production Shots. Original Reviews
    Produced by The Pagnol Estate.'

    SRP $89.99

Also in the catalogue, 8 two-reel Charley Chase shorts. Those were the 'new' items which caught my attention.

Don't know much about any of the titles...the Krzysztof Kieslowski films may be the same as those released this year(?) by Artificial Eye. Have to do some reading.

Since Kino doesn't do much in-house work, I would expect them to use the Artificial Eye materials (probably working from a PAL master) for the Kieslowskis (I expect they'll have the same extras as well).

To me, the exciting stuff here is Camera Buff (1979), Blind Chance (1987), and the two theatrical expansions from Dekalog Five (A Short Film About Killing) and Six (A Short Film About Love).

    Links to AE's Kieslowski releases:

    The Scar
    Blind Chance
    No End
    A Short Film About Killing
    A Short Film About Love

(they haven't released Camera Buff yet)

The Marcel Pagnol trilogy will likely come from the recent French release by Compagnie Méditérranéenne de Films.

Review of the French set from dvdrama (in French)

Speaking of Pagnol, I hope we'll eventually get an R1 DVD of what is reputed to be his best film, The Baker's Wife/La Femme du boulanger (though the trilogy is highly thought of, as well).

Glad all nine will be coming to this side of the pond. I'll probably wait to see the quality of Kino's transfers, but suspect I'll opt for the R2s in the end.

Tim, ya beat me to it - I got my Kino catalogue as well.

Looking forward to the Kieslowski titles as well as the 1943 versions of (Baron) Munchausen and Titanic.

2004 is gonna be a great year!

Glad the Pagnol films are coming. Warners did a grat letterboxed laser of the 1961 Fanny with Leslie Caron. They should release that as a double feature with the unseen version from 1938, MGM - Port of seven Seas.

    Thanks, Tim.

I have been waiting for the Pagnol trilogy for quite some time.

Glad I held back on ordering the set from France.

Hoping there are more to come.

Amazon.com also has them up for pre-order.

Still waiting for Amazon.ca to put them up.

    Can't wait to have these.

Now where's The Double Life of Veronique ?

For those who don't feel like clicking links, here's the coverart:

Short Film About Killing and Short Film About Love have been out in Korea for over a year. I wonder if Kino will port the same transfers or do new ones?

Jeff, as Brian mentioned above, the upcoming Kino Kieslowski titles are the same as those released in the UK by Artificial Eye, with all the same extras. Kino's discs are likely to be ports of those, not the Korean DVDs.

An insider at Kino has given 6/15 as street date for the Fanny trilogy.

I'm a huge fan of all the Kieslowski stuff I've seen (Double Life, Dekalog, 3 Colors), but I have yet to see any of these. How do they compare? (in other words, talk me into preordering the whole lot!)
