After being introduced to this obscure German band over ten years ago, I'm now sitting here listening to Satin Whale's Lost Mankind, thinking "das is goot" and am wondering what other krautrock I should be seeking out?

I am primarily interested in 1970s prog, heavy rock and so forth.

I have heard of Jane, but never actually heard them. The same goes for Novalis.

Any recommendations, specific albums, warnings about available CDs (bootlegs) etc.

Jeff,
If you like Satin Whale, I can highly recommend the following;

Grobschnitt-Solar Music Live
-Rockpommel's Land
-Jumbo
Nektar-Remember the Future
-A Tab in the Ocean
(Nektar were actually British but lived in Germany)
Agitation Free-(all are great)
Birth Control-Live
-Plastic People
-Operation
Embryo-Steig Aus
Guru Guru-Kanguru
-Hinton
Golem-Orion Awakes
Gila-s/t
GAA-Auf der Bahn Zum Uranus
Out of Focus-Four Letter Monday Afternoon
Necronomicon-Tips Zum Selbstmord
Virus-Revelation

There are a lot more awesome Germany albums from the '70's but this will give you a good start. I recommend you start with Grobschnitt, either Solar Music Live or Rockpommel's Land. They just don't make music like that anymore. Absolutely sublime!

Let me know what you pick up and how you like it.

I am also still waiting for the rest of the Eloy catalog to be remastered, particularly Ocean.
