I am writing a dissertation on the media portrayal of the Korean War and US Foreign Policy at this time and was looking for recommendation of films and documentaries of war footage that are available to buy on dvd.

I have just bought Pork Chop Hill

I don't think Inchon (1981) is available on dvd but really need to get hold of a copy.

Any help appreciated

Nikki

Four Riders (1972) is a very superflous Hong Kong film on the subject but worth watching for a giggle and lots of kung fu mayhem

I'm afraid Inchon is not even available on videotape (according to what I've been able to find--portrayals of history in feature films is a research interest of mine). The original Manchurian Candidate, while not focused on Korea, does have the Korean War as a backdrop to its plot and it is certainly a critique of US policy, so you may wish to look at that.

You may also wish to examine The Bridges at Toko-ri (I've not seen it, but it has been on my list of films to look at).

At this link are a few titles that may interest you (some documentaries on the Korean War).

Good luck

The Manchurian Candidate (original)

And of course -- M*A*S*H.

I do know that Timeless media has a 2 disc documentary on the subject. Some of the greatest films/movies are:

The steel helmet
men in war
pork chop hill
the bridges at toko ri
fixed bayonets
the hunters

Nikki - Inchon is available in the grey market (check ioffer and sell.com).
If you haven't already, you should locate a copy of The Korean War Filmography which is an exhaustive resource on films produced in the United States concerning the theme of the Korean War. This book goes into depth on all of the films listed above and many more. You also might wish to check out the recent DVD release The Big Picture - a 1950s US government-produced weekly series explaining America's involvement in the Korean War.

There is also a growing body of scholarship on films produced in South Korea about the war that you might also wish to examine.

Can't believe I'm the first to recommend Tae Guk Gi. Probably the definitive view of the war from the Korean perspective.

Several have recommended The Bridges at Toko Ri. You definitely need to see that one, IMO. So, don't finish without that one. It's easily available. Someone also recommended The Hunters, which gives a good look at the air war between the MiGs and Sabre jets.

You should also check out 1953's CEASE FIRE; the only film shot in Korea in 3-D with actual soldiers playing the lead roles.

We restored it for the second World 3-D Expo in 2006, and it's quite well done in its 3-D version.
