Well, I just broke my New Year's resolution. I did my 1st blind buy for 2003 with Knockaround Guys. I figured, how bad could this be given the loaded cast and the fact that it was written and directed by the guys that gave us Rounders.

After all the negative reviews and the fact that this film was shelved for a while before it was released, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. So much so, that I consider it a keeper.

Weaknesses:

- Simple / some what familiar mob plot
- A bit predictable
- Clichéd hicks
- Slightly less fulfiling ending

Strengths:

+ A great cast that delivers: Barry Pepper & Tom Noonan were some of my favorite performances.
+ Very entertaining without trying to be more than was intended
+ Some interesting character development
+ I liked the soundtrack
+ Good looking transfer
+ 5.1 dts track
+ A few good extras & nice menus

If your a fan of mob movies, then you'll enjoy this film. It's definitely worth a rental and if you love mob flicks you should consider a purchase.

I probably liked this film more than most. All in all, I'd give 3-1/2 out of 5 Stars or a 7 out of 10.

Watched it last night. I overall like it. Nice flick. *GREAT* cast. Malkovich kinda phones his performance in, or maybe he just doesn't quite have the edge I expect from a mob character, but mostly a minor quibble for me. Good acting throughout.

Hope Barry Pepper isn't who's gonna pay the price for Battlefield Earth; he's the *other* good new actor we got out of SPR (the first being Vin Diesel! ;) ) I enjoyed Pepper in Knockaround Guys.

I watched this one a few days ago and enjoyed it quite a bit.
I liked the acting and the sound was pretty terrific.

I'll score it a 8 out of 10:star:

Worth a rental at least.

Later!
