• Brand New 2K Master
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians Howard S. Berger and Steve Mitchell
• Theatrical Trailer
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc

B&W 112 Minutes 1.85:1 Not Rated
Acclaimed filmmaker Phil Karlson (99 River Street, The Silencers, Walking Tall) directed this espionage thriller based on an Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Where Eagles Dare, Ice Station Zebra) novel and starring screen great Richard Widmark (Pickup on South Street, The Alamo, Madigan). Vienna, 1956. After Soviet tanks crush the Hungarian uprising, soldier-of-fortune Mike Reynolds (Widmark) is hired to help Professor Jancsi (Walter Rilla, Code 7, Victim 5), a Hungarian scientist wanted by the Russians, escape from Budapest. Mike and Julia (Sonja Ziemann, The Bridge at Remagen), the professor’s daughter, cross the border posing as journalists, but encounter a problem—the professor is a staunch freedom fighter and doesn’t want to be rescued! Two of the film’s best features are the terrific black-and-white photography by Mutz Greenbaum (Night and the City) and original music score by legendary composer John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars). Co-starring Senta Berger (Diabolically Yours, The Ambushers).

This is very cool. I would be excited for any movie that Kino Lorber could release by Phil Karlson. He’s great. I would especially like to see Hell to Eternity on blu ray.

From John Sturges, the acclaimed director of Bad Day at Black Rock, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Satan Bug and Ice Station Zebra, comes this action-packed western starring screen greats Clint Eastwood (For a Few Dollars More, Two Mules for Sister Sara) and Robert Duvall (The Godfather, Tender Mercies). During a land war in New Mexico at the turn of the century, an ex-bounty hunter (Eastwood) reluctantly helps a wealthy landowner (Duvall) and his henchmen track down a Mexican revolutionary leader (John Saxon, The Appaloosa). Beautifully shot by Bruce Surtees (High Plains Drifter, Night Moves) with a rousing score by Lalo Schifrin (Dirty Harry, Bullitt) and a wonderful screenplay by Elmore Leonard (3:10 to Yuma, Hombre), Joe Kidd features the top-notch acting skills of Duvall and the rugged charm of Eastwood as a hired gun who takes action based on his own particular sense of justice. The stellar supporting cast includes Don Stroud (Coogan’s Bluff), Paul Koslo (Mr. Majestyk), Gregory Walcott (Prime Cut) and Dick Van Patten (High Anxiety). Joe Kidd is loaded with gunfights, conflicts, and a slam-bang finale which has a locomotive being driven through a saloon.

I would think if you took three steps to the left or right, you could escape.

Or go to an island somewhere. ;)

From Harry Saltzman, the producer of James Bond classics Dr. No, Goldfinger, Thunderball and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, comes a film widely recognized as one of the greatest spy thrillers of all time. The Ipcress File is the first film in the series of Harry Palmer mysteries, based on the bestsellers by Len Deighton (Funeral in Berlin), that made Michael Caine (Gambit, The Black Windmill) a star. It is the height of the cold war, and ex-thief Harry Palmer (Caine), now reluctantly working as a secret agent, has been called in to investigate a strange occurrence among a number of leading scientists. It seems the scientists have been kidnapped, but reappear only days after the kidnapping, brainwashed and useless. During the course of the investigation, a tape is uncovered with the word “Ipcress” on it. This stylish classic was directed by Sidney J. Furie (The Appaloosa), shot by Otto Heller (Peeping Tom) and edited by Peter R. Hunt (From Russia with Love), with production design by Ken Adam (Dr. Strangelove) and music by John Barry (Diamonds Are Forever). The great cast includes Nigel Green (Let’s Kill Uncle), Guy Doleman (Billion Dollar Brain), Sue Lloyd (The B¡tch) and Gordon Jackson (The Great Escape).

The World is Full of Secrets
Written, produced and directed by Graham Swon

The World is Full of Secrets is a devilishly creepy film about a group of girls telling scary stories in the dark. An old woman’s voice recalls a terrible event from her distant past: On a summer night in 1996, five teenage girls meet in a suburban house, absent of parental supervision. To pass the time, they begin to tell morbid stories of the world outside, trying to best one another in a grim competition. As the night becomes darker and their play becomes more serious, their world of fiction is consumed by reality in this feverish Decameron-in-miniature.

Special features:
*Audio commentary by director Graham Swon
*Booklet essay by film critic Boris Nelepo (Blu-ray only)
*Deleted Scene
*Trailer
*Optional English SDH subtitles

Now THIS is the definition of a fun trash movie. Miguel Ferrer is so over-the-top evil he makes Tod Slaughter look positively comatose.

Test Tube Babies (1948) and Guilty Parents (1934)
Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture Volume 7

The seventh volume in the series Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture addresses the prickly problems of parenting. In Test Tube Babies, Cathy (Dorothy Duke) and George (William Thomason) seem like the perfect postwar American couple, but a medical deficiency deprives them of the children that will complete their happy home. Facing a future of childless debauchery (represented by an especially raucous adults-only house party, complete with female wrestling), they pay a visit to a fertility specialist, portrayed by deadpan exploitation legend Timothy Farrell, who proposes an unorthodox solution to their problems. J.D. Kendis’s Guilty Parents is one of the better-produced incarnations of the good-girl-gone-wrong cautionary tale, highlighted by a game of silhouette strip-tease at the wayward teens’ favorite roadhouse.

Special features:
*Audio commentary for Test Tube Babies by Eric Schaefer, author of Bold! Daring! Shocking! True!: A History of Exploitation Films
*Sex and Romance (1951), a marital education short film
*Theatrical trailer gallery

I've been admiring the stills from the latest Eastman House restoration, which is Cecil B. Demilles 1916 epic, Joan the Woman. They've struck prints of the final project and, judging from the sample stills with their tinting, it must look simply amazing. Of course, they used the DeMille family print which is close to pristine. Just wondering if that is something you folks might consider in the future. We silent fans are so thankful you make these great classics available in disc form. Really would LOVE to own this one!

The Whistle Blower (1987)
• Brand New 2K Master
• Theatrical Trailer
• Michael Caine Trailers
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 103 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated PG
Screen legend Michael Caine (The Ipcress File, The Holcroft Covenant) gives a riveting performance as an ordinary man caught in a web of corruption and murder in this gripping, taughtly handled and highly charged espionage thriller. English patriot and army vet Frank Jones (Caine) is only mildly concerned when his son Bob, who works for the British Secret Service, says dirty dealings are afoot at the agency. But then Bob is murdered under mysterious circumstances. And Frank’s inquiries thrust him in the middle of a rat’s nest of government deceit that reaches up through the ranks to a traitorous spy (John Gielgud, Murder by Decree) whose secret could cost Frank his own life as well. James Fox (Performance), Nigel Havers (Empire of the Sun), Barry Foster (Frenzy) and Gordon Jackson (The Great Escape) co-star in this suspenseful and intelligent political thriller directed by Simon Langton (Smiley’s People) that will keep you guessing until the very last frame.

How about another Michael Caine espionage thriller, The Fourth Protocol? It's not available on blu-ray anywhere and never even saw a North American DVD release.
