Two German classics restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung.

Münchhausen (1943)

Special features:
*Audio commentary by film historian Samm Deighan
*Documentary on the production and restoration
*1944 animated short by Hans Held
*Samples of Agfacolor restoration
*Theatrical trailer

The Man Who Was Sherlock Holmes (1937)
Directed by Karl Hartl
Starring Heinz Rühmann and Hans Albers

In this fast-paced mystery-thriller, Hans Albers stars as a pipe-smoking super-sleuth who may - or may not - be Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective.

Glorifying the American Girl - Blu-ray Replacement

It has come to our attention that — because of the way the Blu-ray disc was authored — audio playback issues occur on some players, not all.

If your Blu-ray plays audio only in the left channel, please fill out this form for a replacement disc.

The DVDs were not affected — this applies to Blu-ray discs only.

This will take some time to address, we expect to have replacements in Feb/March 2020. Please do not email us directly on issue, we will send when ready.

If this helps anyone, audio plays only through the left channel on the Samsung UBD-KM85C in my bedroom, but plays through both channels on the Sony UBP-X700 in my home theatre.

I appreciate Kino's offer of a replacement disc.

Again WOW! Can't believe Kino is releasing this restoration of the 1943 Münchhausen, which was eye-popping in the old standard DVD version. It is an amazing film, a fanciful epic beautifully shot in gorgeous color. The Sherlock Holmes added attraction sounds interesting as well. Thank you, Kino!

Sweeney! (1977) | Sweeney 2 (1978)
• NEW Audio Commentaries for SWEENEY and SWEENEY 2 by Film Critic and Author Simon Abrams
• Optional English Subtitles
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Sweeney! Theatrical Trailer

Color 97 Minutes 1.66:1 Not Rated
When the sexy mistress of a cabinet minister is found dead of an apparent overdose, Detective Inspector Jack Regan (John Thaw) and Detective Sergeant George Carter (Dennis Waterman) shake off the booze and women to take on the case. But when the bullet-riddled bodies start to pile up in the London streets, Regan and Carter find themselves bollocks-deep in a murderous conspiracy involving doomed prostitutes, machine-gun assassins, multi-national oil companies and a cold-blooded bureaucrat who may be above the law. Barry Foster (Frenzy) and Ian Bannen (The Offence) co-star in this smash feature film that took all the hard-hitting thrills of television’s The Sweeney and blasted it onto cinema screens like never before.

Color 108 Minutes 1.78:1 Not Rated
Britain’s Toughest Cops Are Back and Tougher Than Ever! When the Chief of the Flying Squad is nicked on corruption charges, he makes one last official request of D.I. Jack Regan (John Thaw) and D.S. George Carter (Dennis Waterman): take down a ruthless crew of highly skilled and heavily armed bank robbers terrorizing London. But as the gang’s getaways become increasingly violent, Regan and Carter must tangle with crooked cops, beautiful women, a mad bomber, the government of Malta, and a final raid that becomes a desperate shotgun massacre. The great Denholm Elliott (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Ken Hutchison (Ladyhawke) co-star in this second gritty feature film based on the roughest, toughest and most politically incorrect crime series in TV history.

Two Classics Starring Alec Guinness!

The Captain's Paradise | Barnacle Bill (Double Feature)
• TWO BRAND NEW 4K RESTORATIONS
• Optional English Subtitles
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• The Captain's Paradise - Theatrical Trailer

THE CAPTAIN’S PARADISE (1953) B&W 89 Min 1.37:1 NR
Henry St. James (Alec Guinness, The Lavender Hill Mob), captain of a ferry steamer ploughing between Gibraltar and Kalik in North Africa, believes he has discovered the secret of an earthly paradise, a paradise founded on the love of two very different women. In Gibraltar he has a placid, home-loving wife (Celia Johnson, Brief Encounter) who caters for all the domestic tendencies in his character. In Kalik his wild, romantic desires find fulfillment in the exotic charms of Nita (Yvonne De Carlo, Criss Cross). But he has overlooked the possibility that women can also be creatures of mood and contrast and that a heaven on earth can become a fool’s paradise.

BARNACLE BILL (1957) aka ALL AT SEA B&W 87 Min 1.66:1 NR
From the dawn of man to the Battle of Jutland, the Ambrose family tree has always maintained its ability to create a long line of distinguished naval officers… until now. Captain William Horatio Ambrose (Alec Guinness, The Man in the White Suit) has tried hard to preserve his family’s tradition, but unfortunately suffers from chronic seasickness; just the mere mention of anything slightly nautical or aquatic sends him overboard. Once again, screen great Alec Guinness manages to create another unforgettable comic creation for the last film he made with the legendary Ealing Studios. Released in America as All at Sea, this classic comedy co-stars Donald Pleasence (The Black Windmill), Percy Herbert (Tobruk), Lionel Jeffries (Sudden Terror), George Rose (A New Leaf) and bestselling novelist Jackie Collins.

does anyone ever wonder if Kino Lorber would ever look into Richard Williams version of A Christmas Carol on Blu Ray? It's short, but it's a masterpiece, and I would love to see what other film experts thought of it.

--Jthree

Do you think it might get on Criterion's radar, then?

The horrors of war take on a whole new meaning for Vietnam vet Norman Hopper (John Saxon, Nightmare Beach, Evil Eye, Queen of Blood), whose quiet domestic life in Atlanta is shattered by the return of Charlie Bukowski, a combat buddy who dredges up terrifying flashbacks of flesh eating and bloodshed in the war-torn jungles. Now on the run from the law after taking a bite out of an unwilling victim, Charlie begs Norman to help him get out of town with another fellow veteran, Tom (Tony King, Report to the Commissioner, The Raiders of Atlantis). Soon the ragtag team of cannibals are fighting for their lives, spreading a deadly contagion through the city before heading into the sewers for a gut-wrenching climax no one will soon forget! One of the most infamous Italian horror films of all time, Cannibal Apocalypse was heavily censored in many countries where it played under such titles as Cannibals in the Streets and Invasion of the Flesh Hunters. Now you can finally experience this thrilling collision of action-packed combat and monstrous horror from cult director Antonio Margheriti (The Long Hair of Death, Castle of Blood, Take a Hard Ride, Killer Fish) in its original gory splendor for the first time in fully restored HD! Not for the faint of heart or those with full stomachs!

CANYON PASSAGE (1946)

• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Toby Roan
• Optional English Subtitles
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Theatrical Trailer

Color 92 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
From Jacques Tourneur, the legendary director of Out of the Past, Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie and The Flame and the Arrow, comes this visually stunning actioner that combines all the elements of the classic western: gunfights, barroom brawls, gambling, gold prospecting, Indian attacks, romance and the great outdoors. Among the pioneers of the untamed Oregon Territory of the 1850s are pack-mule express owner Logan Stuart (Dana Andrews, The Ox-Bow Incident), light-fingered banker/gambler George Camrose (Brian Donlevy, The Great McGinty), Camrose’s fiancée Lucy Overmire (Susan Hayward, Rawhide), a villainous outlaw named Honey Bragg (Ward Bond, Singing Guns) and gunfighter Johnny Steele (Lloyd Bridges, Wichita), the friend of a man Camrose has killed. Hoagy Carmichael (To Have and Have Not) with mule and mandolin meanders through the action, singing four of his hit songs, including “Ole Buttermilk Sky.” These vibrant characters collide in Tourneur’s rich Technicolor panorama of frontier life.

NIGHT PASSAGE (1957)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Toby Roan
• Optional English Subtitles
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Theatrical Trailer

Color 90 Minutes 2.35:1 Not Rated
Brothers on opposite sides of the law face off! When the local railroad becomes the constant target of a band of desperadoes led by the notorious Whitey Harbin (Dan Duryea, Thunder Bay), train officials recruit soft-spoken but life-hardened employee Grant McLaine (James Stewart, Broken Arrow, The Rare Breed) to guard the payroll from any more robberies. Trouble is, the gang’s most skilled and lethal gunslinger, the Utica Kid (Audie Murphy, No Name on the Bullet), is Grant’s kid brother. Torn between the bonds of blood and his allegiance to the railroad, Grant finds himself hoping for the best but preparing for the worst as the train comes under attack from Harbin’s bandits. Night Passage climaxes in an unforgettable gun battle as the brothers from opposite sides of the law meet again to settle an old score. Co-starring Dianne Foster (Drive a Crooked Road), Brandon De Wilde (Shane), Jack Elam (Rawhide), Jay C. Flippen (Man Without a Star) and Paul Fix (El Dorado).

THE RARE BREED (1966)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Critic and Author Simon Abrams
• Optional English Subtitles
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Theatrical Trailer

Color 97 Minutes 2.35:1 Not Rated
From Andrew V. McLaglen, the acclaimed director of Shenandoah, The Way West, The Devil’s Brigade, Chisum, Ffolkes and The Wild Geese, comes this epic western based on America’s acquisition of English Hereford cattle (which would phase out Texas longhorns). In the 1880s, Englishwoman Martha Price (Maureen O’Hara, The Quiet Man, Lisbon) and her daughter Hilary (Juliet Mills, Avanti!) come to America to sell their prize Hereford bull at an auction. When he is purchased by Bowen, a wild Scotsman (Brian Keith, Something Big), the women hire a footloose cowhand named Burnett (James Stewart, Bend of the River, Night Passage) to help them transport the animal to its new owner. So begins an adventure that tests the mettle of all involved as they battle killers, stampedes and each other. But when they reach Bowen’s ranch, even greater obstacles force them to summon up extraordinary courage, if they, and the prize bull, are to survive. This wonderful frontier comedy co-stars western legends Ben Johnson (The Wild Bunch), Jack Elam (Support Your Local Gunfighter) and Harry Carey Jr. (Man of the East).

MAN IN THE SHADOW (1957)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Troy Howarth
• Optional English Subtitles
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Theatrical Trailer

Color 80 Minutes 2.35:1 Not Rated
From Jack Arnold, the acclaimed director of It Came from Outer Space, The Glass Web, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Tarantula, The Incredible Shrinking Man and No Name on the Bullet, comes this action-packed thriller starring Jeff Chandler (Ten Seconds to Hell, Red Ball Express) and Orson Welles (Touch of Evil, The Stranger). “Unless we go back to being beasts, there’s got to be law for everybody.” This stand is taken by sheriff Ben Sadler (Chandler) when the brutal murder of a Mexican farm worker is covered up by those who fear its perpetrator: powerful land baron Virgil Renchler (Welles). As owner of the Golden Empire ranch, the formidable Renchler makes his own rules… and a town that needs his business obeys them. But Ben believes in justice, and with the entire county against him, he fights a lonely and dangerous battle. He’s up against a master manipulator, and after a few attempts on the sheriff’s life, suspense mounts steadily to a showdown in which only one man can win. A modern-day western with bite and social significance, Man in the Shadow (also known as Pay the Devil) teems with atmosphere and features top-notch performances by its two leads.
