THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER? It's the stuff that dreams are made of, fellow film buffs. And this presentation sounds off-the-charts magnificent.

Always something new to think about: on top of everything else, this film actually qualifies as a musical, with memorable (and hummable, even singable) vocal numbers throughout. That adds to the dreamlike unreality, most notably when the little girl starts singing out of nowhere in the rowboat... and we're off to surreal territory.

One of the great ironies of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER is that everything we love about the movie -- the poetry, the stylization -- is what doomed it with commercial audiences back in the day. It wasn't the central premise. THE WINDOW was a huge success, which means viewers had no trouble dealing with a kid being menaced by a killer. The significant difference was, THE WINDOW was a straightforward thriller... HUNTER is anything but. Artfulness was often confused with "arty" and then that most dreaded of words, pretentiousness... a problem many UA dramas from this period had. Poor Charles Laughton lost his next directing gig because they were afraid he might make THE NAKED AND THE DEAD too cinematically artistic.

Oh well. At least we got one great and totally unique movie from this wonderful filmmaker.

The movie was ahead of its time which isn't surprising if you consider the times the movie was released.

Thank you, Kino! Excellent work from Reynolds, Clayburgh, and Bergen, and a stellar script by Brooks. I’ve been waiting for this one, and it was well worth it. A must buy!

This will be the first time I keep the previous edition of a movie I'm upgrading. I don't want to lose those superb Criterion extras but I can't NOT have Night of the Hunter in 4K!
Sometimes you gotta do that. I usually base my purchase decisions on the special features and audio commentary content. But I also like the superb video and audio quality of 4K UHD.

This is the movie/film I saw when i had intended to see the Movie version of The Motion Picture of a 60s TV series a;so released by Paramount. After pre-purchasing tickets for the 7:XX show we came back to a line and found out they had sold out the 9:XX show as well. Then there was an announcements that they had oversold the 7:XX show by 100 tickets (it was a new theater) and the first $100 volunteers would get to see the movie "Starting Over" for free and attend another showing of the TMP movie afterward.

There were about 10 people in the theater who had come to see SO. I'm not sure how they felt when 100 people entered the theater - some wearing homemade Starfleet(TM) uniforms. I was 18 and many of the tropes etc of the film I didn't get.

We eventually did get to see TMP (after midnite) but not be before watching "a couple of reels of the Movie "10." ... all-in-all an interesting evening/morning.

All I can remember is a scene in the mattress department when she has an anxiety attack ...

A fine movie. I remember that Burt, Jill Clayburgh, Charles Durning and Candice Bergen all exhibited fantastic comic timing. One of my favorite movie-going memories from '79.

Exciting news about The Day and the Hour! Just as exciting is the possibility (or probability) of more Gaumont titles coming to Kino, maybe even some "golden age" classics. Their Murnau Stiftung releases have been absolutely fabulous so I'm optimistic.

I enjoyed this movie.

My favorite parts were the cab scenes (with frequent Burt co-player Alfie Wise)

UNDERCOVER GIRL (1950) B&W 83 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
The Inside Story of America’s Daring Police Women! NYPD cop Christine Miller (the wonderful Alexis Smith, Conflict, The Turning Point) goes undercover to investigate her father’s killing in this electrically charged thriller directed by noir master Joseph Pevney (Shakedown, Female on the Beach). Posing as a drug buyer named Sal Willis, Christine infiltrates a narcotics ring in order to take down the crooks responsible for her father’s death. But blackmail, gunplay, murder and other duplicities await her as she embarks on her most dangerous case. The sterling cast also features Scott Brady (Undertow), Richard Egan (Violent Saturday), Gladys George (The Maltese Falcon), Edmon Ryan (Topaz), Gerald Mohr (Gilda), Royal Dano (Man in the Shadow), Connie Gilchrist (Flesh and Fury) and Regis Toomey (The Big Sleep).

ONE WAY STREET (1950) B&W 79 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Menacing Mason vs. Dangerous Duryea! Screen great James Mason (Odd Man Out, The Man Between, North by Northwest) stars in this south-of-the-border film noir about a stolen fortune, a borrowed woman and a man too many. After stealing an L.A. gangster’s money—and his girlfriend—the crooked Dr. Frank Matson (Mason) hides out in a small Mexican village. When the townspeople take him in, he decides to live an honest life in Mexico. But, in true noir fashion, destiny awaits the doc in fatalistic Los Angeles. Co-starring Dan Duryea (Scarlet Street, Storm Fear) as the maniacal mobster and Märta Torén (Spy Hunt, Deported) as his moll, One Way Street was the first U.S. picture from prolific Argentine director Hugo Fregonese (Blowing Wild, Black Tuesday, Marco Polo).

APPOINTMENT WITH A SHADOW (1957) B&W 72 Minutes 2.35:1 Not Rated
Was This the Man They Hunted...or the Killer Who Hunted Them? Alcoholic reporter Paul Baxter (George Nader, The Female Animal, The Unguarded Moment) has drowned his career in liquor. A comeback opportunity presents itself when Baxter is a bystander at the arrest of a notorious criminal. But he suddenly finds himself up against a wall and at the wrong end of a deadly set-up in Appointment with a Shadow, a compelling CinemaScope noir co-starring Joanna Moore (Touch of Evil, Ride a Crooked Trail), Brian Keith (Chicago Confidential, The Rare Breed) and Virginia Field (Waterloo Bridge, The Earth Dies Screaming), helmed by Richard Carlson (director of Riders to the Stars and star of Creature from the Black Lagoon) and co-written by suspense specialist Alec Coppel (Vertigo, Moment to Moment).
