Story of a Woman (1970)
• Theatrical Trailer

90 Minutes Color 1.78:1 Rated R
From Leonardo Bercovici, the co-writer of The Bishop’s Wife, Kiss the Blood off My Hands and Portrait of Jennie, comes this passionate love story starring Ingmar Bergman regular Bibi Andersson (Duel at Diablo, Persona). While studying to be a concert pianist in Rome, a Swedish girl named Karin (Andersson) falls in love with a handsome medical student named Bruno (James Farentino, Me, Natalie, Dead & Buried). When she discovers that Bruno is married to an older woman, she heads home to Sweden and marries an American diplomat (Robert Stack, The Tarnished Angels, Airplane!). The diplomat is then assigned to Rome, where Karin becomes torn between the two men. This beautiful romantic drama features a wonderful supporting turn by Annie Girardot (Vice and Virtue, Dear Inspector), costumes by the great Edith Head (The Emperor Waltz, The Sting) and a musical score by the legendary John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars).

Bibi's last name should be corrected to Andersson before the release of the disc. Looking forward to this release.

Are the first three w.c. fields films still scheduled to come out in the fall its a gift, the bank dick, and an old fashioned way? I noticed they never got put on the list of coming soon.

I was saving my little chickadee order to go with them for free shipping but if they are not being released this year i will have to cancel my two mae west titles and two gary cooper ones and reorder again with my little chickadee included on the new order.

Thank you, KL Insider, for keeping us posted -- which is such a great and welcome aspect of your organization.

I can wait the extra month or two because The Mad Doctor especially (never having received any kind of homevid release) is worth the extra wait, Just get us this title -- even if it has imperfections. It will sell well for you, as will any other previously AWOL Paramount horror-mysteries you're able to get us.

Never Gonna Snow Again
Directed by Małgorzata Szumowska & Michał Englert

On a gray, foggy morning outside a large Polish city, Zhenia (Alec Utgoff), a masseur from the East, enters the lives of the wealthy residents of a gated community. Using hypnotic, almost magical techniques to get a residence permit, he starts working. The well-to-do residents in their cookie-cutter homes seemingly have it all, but they all suffer from an inner sadness, some unexplained longing. The attractive and mysterious newcomer’s hands heal, and Zhenia’s eyes seem to penetrate their souls. To them, his Russian accent sounds like a song from the past, a memory of their seemingly safer childhoods. The latest from writer/director Małgorzata Szumowska (Elles, In the Name Of) and her longtime collaborator Michał Englert is an unclassifiable meditation on class, immigration, and global warming with touches of magical realism and moments of sober beauty and subtle humor.

Mae West's first nine films are now on Blu-ray via KL Studio Classics!

In The New York Times, Jason Bailey says they "reveal recurring themes and concerns beyond even the considerable achievement of creating and cultivating her iconic comic persona."

I won’t hold my breath, but KINO mentioned a film in their last post, one I’ve been waiting for… knowing how KINO does things, I wonder if that film could be coming? (No, I’m not asking. Just wondering, with no answer needed.)

I’ll be cautious…

I think DarkRock is right. It does look like a murder mystery. Which would make it work for me. :)

Star Clint Eastwood and director Don Siegel (Two Mules for Sister Sara, The Beguiled, Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz) began their legendary collaboration with the crackerjack crime thriller Coogan’s Bluff. Eastwood commands the screen as Walt Coogan, an Arizona deputy sheriff who is sent to New York City to extradite captured murderer James Ringerman (Don Stroud, Joe Kidd). Coogan slips up, Ringerman escapes again, and the hunt is on! Coogan’s unorthodox law enforcement techniques don’t go over too well with frustrated NYC Police Lieutenant McElroy (Lee J. Cobb, On the Waterfront), who can’t decide which is worse... the prisoner, or the lawman! Lalo Schifrin (Bullitt) provides the stirring score and Susan Clark (The Midnight Man), Tisha Sterling (The Whales of August), Betty Field (Birdman of Alcatraz) and Tom Tully (The Caine Mutiny) co-star in the film that cemented Eastwood’s status as a strong, silent, no-nonsense icon.

From John Sturges, the magnificent director of Bad Day at Black Rock, Backlash, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape and Joe Kidd, comes this hard-hitting western starring action icon Charles Bronson (Mr. Majestyk, The White Buffalo) as Chino Valdez, a leather-tough horse breeder who lives by his own rules. Chino soon strikes up a romance with the beautiful Catherine (Jill Ireland, Breakheart Pass, Someone Behind the Door), but the smoldering passion ignites a fire of hatred when her brother (Marcel Bozzuffi, The French Connection, The Passage), a ruthless cattle baron, unleashes violence upon the half-breed. It’s all-out war—classic Bronson at his toughest! A lush score by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis (Man of the East, Street Law) highlights this rousing Italian-Spanish-French co-production from Dino De Laurentiis (Navajo Joe, The Valachi Papers).

Director: Mitchell Leisen
Actors: Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, Dennis O’Keefe, Walter Abel, Dick Purcell, George Zucco
Black & White

From Mitchell Leisen, the acclaimed director of Midnight, Death Takes a Holiday and Easy Living, comes this romantic comedy starring Hollywood greats Claudette Colbert (The Gilded Lily, The Bride Comes Home) and Ray Milland (The Lost Weekend, Alias Nick Beal) with a script co-written by the legendary team of Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett (Five Graves to Cairo, The Emperor Waltz). Ace reporter Augusta “Gusto” Nash (Colbert) poses as the wife of imprisoned American pilot Tom Martin (Milland) to save him from execution by Spanish fascists. The gesture lands her a front-page story and the praise of her boss, Mr. Phillips (Walter Abel, Mr. Skeffington). Of course, Tom tries to romance Gusto; but though she likes him, her career comes first, and Tom himself prefers freedom-fighting to settling down. Comedy becomes drama as their mixed feelings lead them on a circuitous path through the deepening chaos and catastrophe of the early days of World War II. Gorgeously shot by Charles Lang (Angel) and co-starring Dick Purcell (The Bank Dick), Dennis O’Keefe (Brewster’s Millions), Esther Dale (The Awful Truth) and George Zucco (The Cat and the Canary), this wonderful blend of action, comedy and melodrama won an Academy Award for Best Original Story.

Co-written by Wilder and his frequent collaborator Charles Brackett (A Foreign Affair, Arise, My Love), this charming farce garnered Oscar nominations for its wonderful score by Victor Young (The Paleface) and elegant costumes by Edith Head (Sabrina) and Gile Steele (The Heiress).

Powered by an Oscar-winning performance by Walter Matthau (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Charley Varrick) as the quintessential all-American chiseler, The Fortune Cookie is a hysterically funny comedy that showcases legendary filmmaker Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot, The Lost Weekend) at his uproarious best. Harry Hinkle (Jack Lemmon, Irma La Douce, Avanti!) is one lucky guy! When he’s accidentally clobbered by a 220-pound halfback, all Harry suffers is a slight concussion. All, that is, until Whiplash Willie (Matthau)—a legal scoundrel of the first order—arrives on the scene! For if Harry follows shyster Willie’s advice and feigns a crippling injury, the two charlatans can split a cool million in phony insurance claims. But can Willie’s world-class finagling dispel those ominous words that lie within the fortune cookie on Harry’s hospital plate: You can’t fool all of the people all of the time? The first film to feature the dynamic duo of Matthau and Lemmon (The Odd Couple, The Front Page, Grumpy Old Men) was co-written by Wilder and his brilliant collaborator I.A.L. Diamond (One, Two, Three) and boasts beautiful black-and-white cinematography by Joseph LaShelle (Laura).

This comic confection from director Delbert Mann (Marty, Separate Tables) stars the incomparable Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins, The Art of Love) as butler-turned-thief Claude R. Fitzwilliam, known to his friends as Fitzwilly. The once-sizable fortune of elderly philanthropist Miss Vicki (Edith Evans, The Chalk Garden, The Whisperers) has dried up, and in order to keep the daily charity checks from bouncing, her loyal servant Fitzwilly enlists the aid of the household staff to commit a series of robberies. George Peppard (Newman’s Law) and Mary Tyler Moore (Thoroughly Modern Millie) star in this infectious comedy from director George Seaton (Miracle on 34th Street). Pete (Peppard) and Liz (Moore) live a cynical existence as part of a beatnik commune in a New York City loft. One day, the loft receives an unexpected visitor—a wayward toucan carrying a highly contagious virus that causes intense feelings of happiness and kindness in anyone affected by it! Pete catches the virus and soon an outbreak of euphoria spreads throughout the city like wildfire. But happiness threatens a society that thrives on misery, so the government sends professional problem-solver J. Gardner Monroe (Dom DeLuise, Spaceballs), who arrives wearing a space helmet, to save the good people of New York. Co-starring John McMartin (Sweet Charity), Nathaniel Frey (Damn Yankees), Charles Lane (Papa’s Delicate Condition), Susan Saint James (P.J.), Don Stroud (Coogan’s Bluff) and Thelma Ritter (Daddy Long Legs), this sweet-natured, side-splitting satire poses the question: What’s So Bad About Feeling Good?

A plague envelops the earth, decimating the population and leaving one man still alive: scientist Robert Morgan (Price), who exhibits a strange immunity to the deadly disease. The rest of the earth’s people slowly turn into bloodsucking vampires and Morgan must use all of his knowledge to survive their onslaught. Directed by Sidney Salkow (Twice-Told Tales) and produced by Robert L. The legendary “Triumvirate of Terror”—Vincent Price (Scream and Scream Again), Peter Lorre (The Comedy of Terrors) and Boris Karloff (The Crimson Cult)—star in this twisted tale of sorcery most fowl! Director Roger Corman (The Tomb of Ligeia) and screenwriter Richard Matheson (The Last Man on Earth) deliver a tongue-in-cheek take on Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poem. Dr. Craven (Price), the son of a great sorcerer (now dead), was once himself quite skilled at that profession, but has since abandoned it. One evening, a cowardly fool of a magician named Bedlo (Lorre) comes to Craven for help—the evil Scarabus (Karloff) has turned him into a raven and he needs someone to change him back. He also tells the reluctant wizard that Craven’s long-lost wife Lenore (Hazel Court, The Premature Burial), whom he loved greatly and thought dead, is living with the despised Scarabus. Featuring Jack Nicholson (Prizzi’s Honor) in an early screen role, this Corman-Poe classic about two wizards dueling for magical supremacy is utterly bewitching!

Guyana: Cult of the Damned (aka Guyana: Crime of the Century) is a 1970 Mexican-American exploitation drama written and directed by René Cardona Jr. (Tintorera, The Bermuda Triangle). The film was shot in Mexico, was based on the Jonestown Massacre. The names of the central characters are slightly tweaked from the historical ones, the film is set in “Johnsontown” rather than Jonestown, the cult is led by “Reverend James Johnson” (Stuart Whitman, Shadows in an Empty Room, Rio Conchos, Maniac!) rather than Rev. Jim Warren Jones, and the murdered Congressman is “Lee O’Brien” (Gene Barry, The War of the Worlds and TV’s Burke’s Law) instead of Leo Ryan. Guyana: Cult of the Damned features a stellar cast that includes John Ireland (Red River), Joseph Cotten (The Third Man), Yvonne De Carlo (TV’s The Munsters), Bradford Dillman (Chosen Survivors), Nadiuska (Conan the Barbarian), Hugo Stiglitz (Tintorera) and Robert DoQui (The Devil’s 8).
