The films of Yorgos Lanthimos are abrasive and push the viewer outside their comfort zone - rather like Michael Haneke. It seems that he sometimes just goes out of his way to be misanthropic. We're talking humour here in a shade of black that a raven would envy. But Kinds of Kindness was just way too long for me. It won't be sitting on my shelf, next to The Lobster, The Favourite and Poor Things.

I tried. I really tried, in person at the Angelika Center in NYC and after three quarters of it I just gave up. I found it smug, condescending and despite its' fine cast and production values, a repugnant, colossal waste of time. I know if you leave CITIZEN KANE you never find out what ROSEBUD is but the mysterious allure of this film will have to remain just that, for me at least. I'm not the intended audience for this director... the work is too self referential for my tastes. I go because so many of the actors are artists whose work I admire.
