What good is that if the character is not convincing enough?
Well if a movie takes place on Earth with human characters, I would expect the lighting and shadows to be accurate. With computers, they could spend more time on the actual animation or the style of the film instead of the shadows and lighting, thus reducing the cost of production and they could get some more things put into the final film.

I don't want an animated film that would be better as a live action film, but an animated movie is someone's interpretation of a storyline in an animated medium. So if the storyline takes place on Earth, there are some things that we would expect there to be, like proper lighting and shadows. I don't want the characters to look EXACTLY like humans, but some details should still be there unless it goes against the style of the film. If a movie doesn't have any shadows because it has something to do with the style, themes, or mood, then thats one thing, but them not being there because the animators are lazy is different.
