I've heard that the JVC XV-S500 can read DVD-R / DVD RWs, is this true?
Only certain players can read a pure DVD-R. When the DVD-R is "Finalized" (changed to DVD-Video) it can be read by all newer players. All redorders that record to DVD-R include a program for Finalizing DVD-R's to DVD-Video.
Finalized DVD-R's are the most compatiable with DVD players. If you are looking for a recorder it doesn't matter what the re-writable format is, RAM. -RW or +RW. But for write once only DVD-R is the only way to go.
