The only thing I can really nitpick about this movie is the realization by Leonard that he has short-term memory loss. It's analagous to someone having Alzheimer's Disease. How would one know that the memory is faulty even if one are told? Despite this, I'm still able to suspend disbelief enough to enjoy the movie.
I wondered about this too, but if you pay attention to the way he talks about his memory-loss, it seems like his answer is more of a conditioned response than something he actually thinks about.
Spoiler:Leonard's ability to be conditioned is something that he prides himself in and is what, in his opinion, allows him to "function." In addition, it is evident that he's been dealing with the memory-loss for a substantial period of time -- suggested by all the tatoos and the apparent long-term manipulation by Teddy. Thus, he would have had ample time to condition himself to respond to puzzled stares from people with whom he interacts with a brief description of his disorder.
