Had a funny incident the past few days that I wanted to share........involves a person who involves herself in more things than she needs to and typically makes simple things into rocket science.... such as the case with this situation.
Last year, I entirely remodeled my Aunt's home. She has a son who is a retired army colonel who married a second time after his wife's death and moved to the area. During the remodel, the son, one of my fav cousins, would visit the job and was great to be around but when his wife showed up, she would always bog down things with detail, detail, detail and was usually off subject..... making most persons feel like SHE was the boss and us southerners are mostly stupid....... such was the case again the past few days......
My Aunt calls me for most everything she needs done around the house and I am always glad to help her. She called Sunday, asking for my help with her new tv, a 42" plasma. I arrived to find that it was a tv that her son (the colonel) and his wife had picked out for her and the knowitall wife had tried to set up.....had no sound and had source devices hooked up to the wrongs inputs, etc. Got it all sorted out, found the speaker "ON" switch (that had confounded the knowitall) and was rewarded with a piece of my Aunt's famous pie....... upon walking back into the tv room, the knowitall had been messing with the remote, changed most settings and the tv was "messed up" again.......2 hours later, we still had not resolved the situation and the son and knowitall wife decided to take the tv back......
Well, they did so and got a different brand plasma.... My Aunt called and I returned to find that the son's wife had already unboxed it, attempted to hook it up and again, had nothing displaying successfully. After a while, I had the sources again straightened out but then found we had no sound.......none of us could think straight with the son's knowitall wife fluttering around with a million questions, trying to "make sure" we were doing everything "right", or to her satisfaction, again trying to make it into rocket science..... telling us we probably needed an rf converter or a reverse modulater (WHAT???) or something...who knows where she gets all this info...... I quietly went over to the box the plasma had been removed from, opened it up and JOIULA!!!, found the sidemount speakers that had been overlooked when they unboxed the tv..... which began a 30 minutes excuse session of why this knowitall had missed unpacking everything out of the box..... and again made a simple situation into a 2 hours test of stupid ......
My Aunt and I shared several understanding "looks" throughout the ordeal, leaving me to wonder how they deal with this womon on a daily basis......I'm sure glad I don't have to.........

Well you have more patience then I have. I am the type of person that will let that happen once but the second time around I will call you on it. I am under the belief that many people do stupid things because no one has ever told them not to. No matter what their age is.

I had an experience not exactly the same but just as funny involving my friend's uncle who had a lot of money but wasn't very tech savvy, he had bought a Plasma back when they didn't come with speakers and he & my friend had been trying for about 8 hours to get some sound out of it, so they called me...

"you have to hook it into your receiver over there."

    "My what?"

"Your really nice expensive "stereo" (Yamaha RX-Z9 or whatever the 2000/2001 flagship version was) over there."

"But I paid good money for this damn TV and you mean to tell me that it doesn't even come with speakers?"

"No, but hell man that's a nice receiver, trust me you'll get better sound out of that then you will with some tiny TV speakers."

"I never use it, it's too complicated."

"....then why did you get it?"

"I asked for the best one they had and that's what they gave me, just like the TV."

    "...and you never use it."

    "Nah."

    "...can I have it then?"

"(laughs) You and my nephew, both the same....NO."

"Well that's the only way you're going to get any sound out of this TV Paul."

"Well then I'll just return it, they have the balls to charge that much but not even offer speakers? Christ!"

...that nice receiver still sit's there to this day...unused from the day it was bought. He bought a Toshiba HDTV....but only watches SD as buying an external tuner was a rip off to him as well.... [IMG]

I won't have the patience either. But what I do is I explain stuff on the fly(as I'm installing/fixing) if they show interest, I continue. But the moment they drop interest or say something like, "can you just fix it", I stop everything all together. I give them a chance by explaining that I'm just showing them what to do in case they run to a similar problem later. If they show no interest again, I stop everything for good. Friend or family, I don't care.

This kind of reminds me of an idiot in one of my old classes. Everyone thinks he has the best "stereo"(it was really a surround sound, he didn't know what it was called) and one day when the VCR wasn't working, he tried to fix it. He tried everything, not even noticing that there was no wire going to the TV. He ended up changing the brightness, contrast, and tint all the way up(or almost). Then after that, he notices that the wire's unplugged. Now it started working but he immediately says," It works, but the picture quality looks horrible." Well loser, that's what happens when you change the brightness, contrast, and tint.
And Kevin, whenever I go to wal-mart(not often) and someone buys a nice 50" plasma HDTV, the people always say," ...but do I have to buy a tuner?"

I have the same problems with my sister(soon to be excised from my life), and her computer. She routinely screws it up, calls me acting all friendly and....sisterly(NOT in character) and wants me to come by and fix it.

That's why it sucks when technology starts to become 'affordable' for everyone (well, maybe that's not exactly the same as above, but...). Remember the days when tech support was FREE? That's because only the most computer savy people owned computers and tech support wasn't BOMBARDED with morons who don't understand that computers don't work if they're NOT PLUGGED IN! [IMG]

Ahhh, those days are gone and we're stuck with morons with too much technology. [IMG]

unlike donny, most of my friends know they're not as savvy, so they actually listen to me. [IMG]

i always try to remember i take it for granted that this stuf is "easy". i'm always the ht/computer/tech guy that my friends go to. personally, i enjoy it. i like the idea of helping them out. and, unlike some of the other folks being discussed here, they appreciate it. but, if they didn't ... i prolly would tell them i'm too busy or make up some other excuse.

on the flip side, when it comes to other stuff, i know i suck. i'm still trying to figure out why my lawn isn't as green as everyone elses! [IMG]

aw hell, i guess were all j6p's in something or another. [IMG]

Yeah, I've kind of given up on my yard looking the best on the block due to inherent low interest and skill in that area. It's green because weeds stay green all year [IMG]

I had an old roommate who would argue up and down the east coast about stuff he had no Idea About. A little back round I have been doing Home Electronics Now For about 11 Years. I worked as a product specialist for a British Audio Co and Have certifications from several manufactures ( way tooo many to list). I think I have a little knowledge about this stuff. maybe.

Now My roommate decided he wanted to argue with me about Movie theaters and the amount of speakers that were on the wall and that it was not 5.1, also that his Panasonic MINI SYSTEM with 150 watts per Channel was better than my TAG McLaren Separates at Only 125 watts per Channel and that THX is a type of surround format like Dolby Digital and DTS. This went on for hours and hours at a time. Mind you he knew nothing and I mean nothing about this stuff.

I know what you all must be going through. I Love helping out my frinds with this stuff. I also love going over peoples Houses for BBQS and Being in the line of work Im in i have to Check out the System. There was one time I was at a BBQ with my girlfriend and the Host who worked with said girlfriend found out what i do for work. He said Hey "Sherm" could you take a look at my system?

Man oh man what a disaster this was. his FRIEND who "KNEW" about this stuff Hooked it up. WOW this was a complete CF. DVD player Hooked up analog, sub set to none the list goes on and one. Luckily I had my tape measure a Digital cable and SPL in the car. After about 20 minutes the system was up and running and the Host was grinning ear to ear. Come to find out this friend hooked up the neighbors system as well so guess what I went next door and fixed another BOTCHED system.

It Boggles my mind to think how many systems are out there that are just hooked up wrong.

been through a couple of those myself mark. what a trip those usually turn out to be. that, of course, brings up the other dilemna i'm sure you go through.

whether or not to say something when you notice an improper setup. for now, i've decided to keep my mouth shut unless specifically asked. just easier that way. [IMG]

Oh If I see a system that was set up WRONG. I Lay it on Pretty Thick. Making sure that they know that the system that they spent good money on was hooked up wrong and sounds like shit.

After I get done with the system 99.9% of the time they do notice a big DIFF.

In collage many years ago we were watching David Letterman. On this particular show, he was doing a gag where the camera slowly rotated so that the picture did a 360.

Halfway through the show the picture was upside down. We called in the dorm suite know it all and told him he had to fix the TV. Well every time a commercial came on, the picture was back to normal and we made a big deal about him being able to fix it. He left the room feeling very proud of himself. After calling him in 3 more times and having him fix it each time, by the fourth time he stayed in the room through the commercials. When they cut back to the Letterman show, he figured it out. Boy was he pissed and we were laughing for days. For the whole year people called him to fix their tv's.

My brother has a TV with an S-Video input. When I told him that his DVD player would look better if hooked it up through that input (instead of the composite), he said he didn't care. He knew it'd look better, but didn't care enough to warrant the purchase of an S-Video cable.

My uncle is like this. When he tries to set up things or fix them, he often makes things worse or harder than they are. I'm by no way a tech person, but it's often blatantly obvious that he did things all wrong. I'll tell him to do or try things a different way, and he'll always say I'm wrong because he thinks he knows everything. He'll also hover around me or anyone else if he's around and will keep making comments that it's being done wrong. I remember one time my dad came over to help me fix a couch. My uncle happened to be here and he kept saying what to do to fix the couch my cousin broke. My dad was an upholsterer, and kept saying to him that he was wrong about how to fix it. My uncle wouldn't shut up, so my dad got pissed off and left and told him to fix it.

I would have told this woman to either shut-up or leave. If she did neither, I would have left myself and told my aunt to give me a call after they go home.
