I finally saw Croupier last night for the first time. I was very impressed. The acting by Clive Owen was outstanding. I am embarrassed to say that I had not heard of him before this movie. I don't watch that many UK films . . . not that I avoid them either (just saw Sexy Beast recently, as well).

But for a minor flaw with the plot:

Why did they need to pay Jack 10,000 pounds just to catch a guy cheating? Any dealer would call a "punter" out for placing a late bet...

I still enjoyed this movie a lot. I admit that I have a certain attraction to, for lack of a better word, "gambling" movies (e.g., The Sting, Casino, Rounders, Color of Money).

Did others here find this movie as impressive as me? What other "gambling" films would you suggest?

Thanks Howard. I added The Runner to my queue on Netflix. Good call on The Grifters. Excellent movie. And if Snatch is on there, I guess Lock, Stock should also be.

Jeff, I was so excited about the first part of your post, I didn't even read the middle part where you had already named most of my favorites. :D
BTW, I think I meant "The Cincinnati Kid" instead of "Cool Hand Luke".

I'm a HUGE fan of Croupier. Jeff to answer your plot point:Someone who was not forewarned might harm or stop the cheater, thus capturing one of the robbers, which is certainly not part of the plan. That, or not wanting trouble of the kind Jack had earlier, he might pretend not to see.

Best line: "Hold on tightly, let go lightly." It is my new motto. Did you listen to the director's commentary? Really informative and otherwise excellent.
Gambling films: You guys forgot to list David Mamet's House of Games and Paul Thomas Anderson's Hard Eight, both of which are out on DVD.

Yes! Of course Hard Eight. I forgot to mention that. Great movie. Bit of trivia: original name of the movie was Sidney, but the distributors made PTA change it. As a result, he actually filmed "Boogie Nights" into his next film, making a title change impossible. (Most people probably know this, but what the heck).

Thanks Ted for the plot point explanation. I agree with you for the most part, it just seems like
they could have created a distraction without paying anyone that much money... but then again, his dad probably wanted him to have something for his troubles!!
