Well put, Nick. And I believe that's Apple's take on this matter as well. We're not talking about the highest possible quality downloads, etc. since most people reading these forums already know of ways to get such files through other means. What Apple has done is to make some mainstream video media extremely accessible to the masses in quite a painless way. There will always be other ways to do this with better (although not easier) results. That's always been true with anything iPod. Look at all the competing formats, many of which can produce audio with as good or better quality at lower prices. But look at the market share. It's no accident that the iPod controls the lion's share of the market - and it's not even close. The people have spoken in the handheld audio arena.

There are many flavors of MPEG. MPEG-1 is used for VCD. MPEG-2 is used for DVD and HDTV. Both of these do not compress as well as DivX and XviD. Both are actually (or at least originally) based on MPEG-4 Part 2. The H.264 used by Apple is MPEG-4 Part 10; it should be better than DivX.
