Hey, I just sold one of my Tempests and replaced it with the 18" Maelstrom from AdireAudio.. I already have a Tempest in a 200L or so box, tuned to 20hz that im keeping.. I have a Mackie FR1400 giving 500 to each enclosure.. The box I took the Tempest out of is about 287L tuned to 18.75hz.. Should I drop the 18 incher right into that box or maybe build the 22" sealed cube on suggested on their site? I was hoping to get the new 18" and for it to take me to the next level of bass that you can't hear, just feel ;) I've read a couple posts that talk about the Maelstrom as being more of a pro driver than a HT driver.. Did i make a bad decision getting rid of the Tempest?

For HT, maybe, it depends on how much room gain you get and how much SPL you need to get to reference level at the listening position.

Just looking at sims, the 200L/20Hz Tempest is way too underdamped for my tastes, with the 287L/18.75Hz only slightly less so.

If they were mine, I'd put the Tempest back in the 287L and try it tuned to 15-16Hz, with the Maelstrom in the 200L at 20-21Hz. Compare them in the same location with something like the Pod race or anything with low notes and lots of slam/punch in the midbass and make the call.

For bass you feel, dual Tempests in ~380L/17Hz will satisfy most folks and do some damage. Four puts you in dual CB territory, and the new driver Adire is working on should be at the CB level, so four of those ought to knock the house down if that's what you want to do.

Really though, until you put the Tempest in the ~380L/17Hz cab you won't know what it's capable of, and the Maelstrom IMO needs to be doubled up and mated to a horn for dance clubs, small theaters, etc., or serious HE HIFI.

Greg,

I bought the 18" hoping that it would provide me with deeper, lower bass than the 15" Tempest, maybe I should have done my homework a litte more.. Damn!

Craig, the Tempest will go a bit deeper than the Maelstrom but I think you should try the Maelstrom in the 287L enclosure. I will finally put my Maelstrom together this weekend and it is going into a 275L enclosure tuned to 22Hz. I think the Tempest will be very happy in a 200L enclosure tuned to 20Hz.

I will post results of the Maelstrom Monday.

Kyle,

please let me know the results.. I guess what I don't understand is why the 15" goes deeper than the 18"? I thought I would exchange one of my Tempests for the 18" and it would energize the room more..

Yes, the T/S parameters dictate that the Tempest will go a bit deeper before rolling off but the Maelstrom will still move more air than a single Tempest even with its shorter Xmax.
I've run a Tempest in 225 liters and will compare to the new Maelstrom although, I will have to go by my memory since my Tempest is now in a 85 liter sealed enclosure. It will be interesting :)

Well, a little change of plans! I just put a screwdriver through one of my Tempests, trying to take it out  .. Damn, that just blew the budget :frowning: .. Back to a single enclosure until more funds come. Kyle, I would stil like to know how the Maelstrom turns out for you, I will be looking forward to the review.

Dood, are you going to try and fix it? I sure as hell would.
Is it through the surrounding rubber or through the middle area?
If your not going to fix will you be just throwing it away??
Id be happy to take it off your hands:D

I just started my Maelstrom subwoofer build. It is a 22 3/4w x 22 3/4h x 23 1/2d cube.

I will be sure to post my impressions when it is complete.
