This is a tough one.
They are 2 of my favorite actors (after De Niro and Pacino).

I think Crowe wins slightly.

Just look at the range of characters he has played in the past few years.

True! I don't know of another actor that can go from LA Confidential, to The Insider, to Gladiator, to A Beautiful Mind, and not only give phenomenal performances, but transform himself into all of those characters in a truly believable fashion.

I love them both, but anyone who can go from playing a shy, mentally unstable farmboy to a geeky, goody two-shoes virgin to a frightening neo-Nazi skinhead to a sweet and tender gay plumber to a brooding gunslinger preacher to a tough but troubled LA cop to a doughy, confused whistleblower to a betrayed Roman general to a paranoid-schizophrenic mathematician has my vote.
Russell Crowe
Crowe doesn't have to act his way out of a paper bag. He owns the paper bag factory.
