That's a really good trailer. I like the fact that Joaquin Phoenix sings in it and that they're not completely hiding the musical aspect. This trailer does enough to be intruding but doesn't feel like it's giving too much away.

I know that the film will arrive five real-world years after the first film. But after watching this, I wondered how long it has been in-universe. I could be wrong about this, but I don't think anyone involved with the movie has actually said when the action of the story is set relative to the first one.

Takes place 2 years after the first film.

Will begin with a Looney Tunes-inspired cartoon starring the Joker. Animated by Sylvain Chomet (‘The Triplets of Belleville’)

Most of the music in ‘JOKER 2’ is really “just dialogue,” says Todd Phillips. “It’s just Arthur not having the words to say what he wants to say, so he sings them instead.”

Todd Phillips says their won’t be a 3rd ‘joker’ movie “It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.”

And, oddly, Lady Gaga just released a new single with Bruno Mars called "Die With a Smile", but it seems that it's not part of this film.

In the unlikely event that this grosses the same billion dollars its predecessor did, of course there will be consideration of sequel, regardless of what Phillips says now or whether or not he chooses to return. If the film underperforms relative to expectations, then it’ll be a moot point.

If Todd Phillips declined to return but Joaquin Phoenix wanted to, WB could proceed with a third film under someone else's direction. I don't think the audience would accept anyone else replacing Joaquin Phoenix for this iteration of the Joker/Arthur. So a third film would be most contingent upon Phoenix's participation. Whether he would want to do it without Phillips is another question.

That being said, as has been mentioned above, we went from Joker being announced, released and marketed as a standalone film in 2019 to this thread about a sequel which was created in 2022. You never know what is going to happen. It took a while for this film to come together, but it eventually did. So I don't think we're going to know immediately if they're planning another one. WB would certainly be interested in another one if this makes money.

I think it also depends on how this film ends. I don't know what the ending is. I don't want to know until I see it. Even if I did know, I wouldn't post it here. But the way to definitively end this iteration of the character would be if Arthur does not survive this film.

We'll see what happens.

It's not clear to me when the first film was announced as a "standalone" film whether they meant it was going to be a one-and-done situation, or they meant "standalone" in that it wasn't going to be connected to any of the other DC films that had been made or were planned.

Warner had said prior to the first film's release that it was a one-off, no sequels. They apparently changed their mind after the opening weekend and allowed Todd Phillips to start development on a sequel, though he seemingly wanted to explore other DC characters.
