I just rented this on DVD the other night. The transfer is not the greatest - and looks very video-like - not filmlike. Any news of this being remastered or an extended version?

I wish they could find the alternate ending where Macready was rescued
    I'd like to see that.

Personally I thought this was a fine transfer considering it was one of the earlier DVD releases, but any new transfer and remaster would be welcome.

This film is a prime candidate for Universal's ULTIMATE EDITION series.

A 3-DISC edition containing the the theatrical cut, remixed DTS, and DD, as well as the existing commentary. (One of the best IMO) Then a second disc containing the alternate tv-cut and Documentary. That version contains alternate takes, a horrible voice-over, and slightly different ending. It sucks, but it would be neat to have. Also, the ending where Macready is rescued (was that even filmed? Or just scripted?) And the ultimate bonus feature? A 3rd disc, a CD with the Ennio Morricone score, never before available on CD.

I think I would fill my pants if this came to be.

p.s. The Morricone score is avalable on the current disc as the 2nd audio track during the commentary.

Yah, I'm almost 100% sure that they mentioned that it was filmed on the Doc.

I'd also re-buy this title in a second if it was rereleased with a new anamorphic transfer. More extras or an Ultimate Edition treatment would be nice, but not necessary.

This is a great movie. I just have s-video in my system so the image looks pretty good to me. Although I'd welcome a remastered edition, I'd rather have other movies put on dvd.

I would love to see it. If Carpenter's "Big Trouble in Little China" can get the special edition treatment, I can't see why "The Thing" wouldn't.

Carpenter has such a cult following, I wouldn't be surprised to maybe see a Carpenter/Russel box set someday?

It ain't gonna happen guys, if they won't re-release for Hitchcock (Vertigo, Psycho) then they damn sure won't for John Carpenter.
I personally think it is a waste of time as there are many other unreleased films deserving of a DVD petition, but hey knock yourselves out.

Here's my vote for a new release. The extras are fine, though. Just give the film a dual-layer disc of its own and put the documentary on a second disc...
