Basically, it's a genuine dramatic film BUT with *real* sex scenes! Yes, the actors won't be faking it!

I dunno how he'll expect this to get any kind of distribution in America since you can bet the MPAA will slap an NC-17 on there without blinking.

It's definitely a ballsy idea, especially for any actor who is willing to perform (ahem) on camera.

Will the public consider this film "porn with a budget"? Either way, I'm interested in seeing this (by the way, the web site is accepting video submissions from *anybody* so if you're looking for your big break.....)

If it's a good/great movie, my bet is that Lions Gate will pick it up, like they did for Irreversible.

Doesn't have to be rated at all -- that MPAA stuff is voluntary and mostly for marketing purposes. "Y Tu Mama Tambien" showed that at least the Landmark chain, along with the independent moviehouses, would screen it. Of course, this is a bit more explicit than "Y Tu Mama Tambien", but I don't see that as a problem for Landmark and the independents.

Hmm, that's a switch. On the Hedwig commentary he says he was working on a pre-teen fantasy-type film if I remember correctly.

This has been attempted somewhat in porn. I'd recommend all you 18+ types see Masseuse 2. He could probably largely use porn actors. It would be hard to find some who can act, much less act while having sex, but there are some out there. Men may be hard to get as doing anything gay can hurt a mainstream career. (Peter North not withstanding.)

There's a major problem in that conventionally shot movies are very physically demanding on the male stars. There won't be many guys who can do this.

Y Tu Mama Tambien also played at the local Marcus Hollywood Cinema here in Appleton...I don't know if it played across the board with the chain, but it does say that Marcus is willing to screen more explicit films.

As for Mitchell's project...frankly, it doesn't interest me so much that it might have "real sex" but that it ends up being a good story and watchable as Hedwig was.

well, from all reports, Larry Clark's KEN PARK has beaten him to the punch stateside, though the Europeans have been at it for a while (IDIOTS, INTIMACY, BAISE-MOI, et cetera ...)

He's been working on an animated children's film with musician Julian Koster, the genius behind Music Tapes and a member of Neutral Milk Hotel. The last thing I heard about the film was that the script was near completion. If anyone wants to know how amazing this project could be check out the 1st Imaginary Symphony For Nomad album by Music Tapes(John Cameron Mitchell gets a thanks in the liner notes). It just cries out to be turned into an animated film.

Yea Clarks Ken Park has graphic sex scenes and that film hasnt gone anywhere since it was made.

I was suprised when I saw Center of the World - they showed (yes showed) a girl insert a lollipop and then suck on it.

Re: KEN PARK - if by "hasn't gone anywhere" you mean "hasn't been released yet", that's accurate, but it has a distributor (American Cinematheque) that's planning a theatrical release. It's not a particularly uncommon lagtime given the nature of the festival circuit - it just started showing this fall.

Hm...nearly a year since anyone has posted in this thread.

If all goes according to plan, I should be able to post a little "review" by the weekend. :D

I'm not in it. :frowning:

Hey, all.

So I saw the movie tonite.

I'm a little drunk....hehe. And it was an intereresting party. My good friend hosted as his drag persona. John Cameron Mitchell was there...a real down to earth friendly guy. Listening to him and my friend banter was freaking hilarious..

But the film...hm...I dunno. Maybe I need to see it 6 more times, I dunno... It was no Hedwig. I'll sleep on it and share some thoughts on the weekend...I appreciate what he was going for....I'm just not sure he got there. :frowning: I wanted to love this movie, but I don't think I did.

I'm sure this film has been discussed a bit in other threads, but I wanted to resurrect this one to mention that I went to see it for a second time on the weekend--sober this time.

Well, I will never again post opinions on movies I see when I'm hammered because boy was I wrong about this one.

Turns out I do love this movie after all. Despite the explicit sex in the movie, it's actually a very sweet movie with a lot of heart. Like Mitchell's previous movie, I think this one encourages us to look inside ourselves and at our hangups and think about things in new ways.

I can't write movie reviews to save my life, so I suggest checking out Jim Emerson's review on Roger Ebert's site (ah, heck, just click here). He gets it almost right, save for the fact that I don't necessarily agree that 9/11 is as big a factor as he seems to think it is.

So this is my official retraction of my previous post.

Enjoy!
