    That's great to hear.

Can you tell me if the discs are Single Layer or Dual Layer?
I'm betting SL as it seems that most foreign films released by studios (especially catalog titles) are only single layer. Still has to be better than the previous release.

The back of the case does state that the disc is double sided, single layer.

I'm sure there's room for improvement, but these transfers aren't bad at all.

Are both movies on 1 disc (1 per side)?

Amazon.com states: "Number of discs: 2". If they share the same disc then it's almost guaranteed to be single layer on each side.

Yes, that's correct. It's a flipper with a movie on each side.

Thanks for the info Ralph, much appreciated.

I may hold off until the price drops... it's only $20 now, but I'm holding off on principle mostly. It's great that the quality is better on this release, but the studios have to stop short-changing foreign films this way. These films are classics and at the very least deserve a seperate DVD9 for each film.

I was hoping Criterion would get their hands on these titles, but I guess not. Maybe there's hope for an HD release? (ya, I'm not being realistic).

Borders has it on sale for $16.99 (along with Raise the Red Lantern) if you have one nearby.

Just ordered it from Amazon, so I will hopefully get it on Friday. I'll compare it with the UK PAL discs. Hopefully these are entirely new masters and not just the old master re-processed to be anamorphic.

Ralph what kind/size display are you viewing these on?

I would also like to see confirmation that these aren't just the old discs rehashed.

Which is exactly what I commented on in my review of the original MGM discs, which looked atrocious.

I just tried the DVD in my PC, and the VOB files on Manon of the Spring are from 4/16/2007.

I've never seen the old discs in person, but I've read plenty about them. I was afraid this would just be a rehash (it looks that way from the packaging), and I feared the worst as I first put in the disc. Both movies first bring up the MGM promo that many old DVDs have, but then the FOX logo comes up.

My display is a 50" Hitachi widescreen LCD and my player is the Oppo DV-981HD connected via HDMI.

Mind giving us some snaps to compare to the ones over at DVDBeaver?

Ralph, Thanks for going to the trouble of capping those.
Did you notice any ghosting (slight trails with movement and pans?) that would be a sign that these were PAL-NTSC conversions.

also how are the subs? ON the UK disc, the subs for Manon were excessively large and obtrusive. If everything was the same save for slightly smaller subs, I might still consider it a worthwhile upgrade.

    ________
after comparing these caps with the ones on DVDBeaver, it looks like this is still a botched transfer. whites are clipped and the color is too saturated and too golden. This is quite similar to what I recall the UK disc being like, even though the caps on dvdbeaver don't show it.
if you take the one of Beart nude and compare the detail in her right arm and on the ground by her right arm (the small area in light) you can see how blown out this new tranasfer is. Just going by the caps, I think I prefer the cooler color timing found in older MGM version. It also looks like it contains more high frequency detail- whereas in the UK (and this current version) that high frequency detail looks filtered out.
Going by those screencaps, this still looks like a miss to me, although a lot of people I suppose will be satisfied with it.

    I'm betting this is a PAL-NTSC conversion.

It wouldn't be hard to better the original R1 release. I do wish Criterion or someone else who actually cares about these titles could get these two and do them properly. For $13 I don't I'd complain too much about this new set, but still...
