I'm trying to find these two movies but am unable to. Are they available anywhere?? Are new releases planned??

Thanks

Released in R1 by MGM on January 23, 2001. Might still find copies in some "low traffic" electronics stores, or used copies.

Those reviews are far too negative.

I have the UK discs and am very happy with them. They may not be reference quality but not many DVDs are. I will offer this and this as a comparison. That's how I feel about the transfers.

There are also the Australian discs here and here too. Which look impressive.

To be fair, the film has always looked grainy (the French discs are too) and also dark. I saw them at the cinema and the looked overly dark and green there too. I guess that's how they should look.

Either way, you'd be mad to buy the overpriced OOP Region 1 discs.

Hmm...I didn't realize the MGMs were OOP. I could have picked them up a time ago for around 12.00 each. Maybe this means we'll be getting a 16:9 transfer?

For eighty bucks you could be well on your way to owning a region-free player and then invest in foreign transfers of the two movies that are (while not superb) light years better than the MGM disasters. Anyone paying that for the region 1 discs deserve what they get. Aside from EXODUS, they are the worst transfers I've ever seen - unbelievable, unwatchable aliasing - and all three from MGM! Wish they'd swallow their pride, spend a few bucks and re-do these fine films. Maybe Sony will, but only after a ten year wait for the HD versions!

I got a region free and PAL-NTSC converting player a bit ago. I'm gradually getting my feet wet with other regions so I'll probably pick up JdF and MdS soon.

Well. It seems I'll wait for some future release.

I never saw the two movies and was thinking about buying them blindly. Guess I'll rent them for now.

I rented the R1 discs from NetFlix when they were first released a few years ago.

The transfers were simply awful. These two French classics deserve much better.

Jean De Florette / Manon of the Spring (1987)

World Films

July 24 2007

Anyone know anything about that company or this release?

The only review at Amazon though it was a Judy Garland movie. :frowning:

Jean De Florette was last released under the "World Films" sub label of MGM. Its therefore a reissue of the old disc (IE: Non-anamorphic POS), a bootleg, or a very strange coincedence.

a rare case where the Laserdisc copies of these are actually superior to the dvd. They both share the same master, but the LD doesn't suffer from the horrendous amount of compression artifacts the dvd does.

A great shame that 6 years later they still aren't getting a proper release.

I the UK versions. Like Dick said, better than the MGM discs, but still less than these films deserve...and the subs on Manon are way too large.

Yes, see the post I made in this thread over three years ago. These transfers are AWFUL and the ones you mentioned from "World Films" are the same transfers. These movies deserve so much better than this....

With Fox distributing these, are we sure they're not anamorphic?

I picked up the new double feature disc last night, and both Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring ARE anamorphic. The transfers are quite good, too, and the price is great ($19.99 SRP for both movies). No complaints here.
