JBL subwoofer with constant, loud boom (1 Viewer)

I have a JBL DSP-10 subwoofer that I use for my "secondary" home theater. Basically it's a small setup for the kids in the family room.

Recently I woke up at night hearing a LOUD, constant boom that was coming from the sub. It almost sounds like it is stuck on a particular frequency and is blasting that sound. All of the other equipment was off. I unplugged the sub and have tried switching the wires and other outlets to no avail.

Any suggestions on how I might try to repair it?

Thanks!

Anthony

These subs are VERY well known for doing this. The amp is failing (specifically, a cap is going bad I believe). Contact JBL and they may service or replace it for you. You're lucky, my friend's was actually smoking when he found it doing that.

Response I got from JBL.......I still have 7 months on the 5 yr warranty but it looks like it will not do me much good.........
I can get a new JBL 10 from Best Buy for under $300.......doesn't sound like they are offering much........looks like I will be looking at all options.
Note: This sub worked perfect in my set-up......plus I am now married so have little opportunity to crank it up.
What is a good replacement for my PB10? I am not looking to get something better, just equal or less as I can not enjoy like I used too.
Note: Wife will be very unhappy if I look to spend over $300......

"Good evening and thanks for your inquiry. The JBL PB10 subwoofer carries a split 1/5 warranty, with the electronic portions (amp assembly, fuse, power supply, etc...) covered for 1 year, and the woofer covered for 5 years. If the unit was sold to you approximately 1 year ago, the unit may be close to the end of this warranty.

From what you are describing, the issue sounds like it is in the amplifier section. I would normally refer you to an authorized JBL repair facility, for servicing, but, unfortunately, we were recently informed that your serial numbered JBL PB10 would not be able to be repaired, as the company that manufactures the main Power Amp Module used in your serial numbered unit is no longer in business. Because of this, we are no longer able to supply us with the main part of the amplifier assembly.

This is not something we planned on happening, and, because of this, we are offering consumers 2 options. If the unit is under warranty, or just slightly past the warranty, we could replace the subwoofer for a brand new JBL subwoofer. If you can fax a copy of the sales order, showing the date of purchase, along you’re your information (name, address, phone #, e-mail address), I can begin the return process, if the unit is under warranty.

If the unit is more than 6 months out of warranty, they would have the option of purchasing a brand-new JBL subwoofer (the new SUB10 would be the direct replacement) at a reduced price. Take a look at the new sub on our website (http://www.jbl.com ).

If the customer wanted to purchase a new subwoofer, we can sell a brand-new JBL SUB10, which would be the current comparable model, at our accommodations price ($168.75 plus tax and shipping (for a new SUB10 or $138.75 plus tax (if applicable) and shipping (for a re-furbished SUB10)). The unit would come with a full Manufacturer's Warranty, starting from the date we process the order. If this option is something you would like to explore, I will need the following information:

1. Name, as it appears on your credit card
2. Billing address
3. Shipping address (if different than billing)
4. Phone number (secondary # if available)
5. Credit Card type, Visa, MasterCard, Amex (we do not take Discover)
6. Credit Card Number and expiration date.
7. We will need for you to field destroy your subwoofer by sending us the entire cone assembly cut from the frame of the woofer as well as the entire power cord from the amplifier plate to the plug and send those 2 items to the following address.

JBL Consumer
Attn: Ed Carter
250 Crossways Park Drive
Woodbury, NY 11797

Upon receiving your package, I will contact you directly to take your credit card information and complete the order process.

Once the order has been created, you will be receiving a system generated e-mail, providing your order confirmation number. The replacement subwoofer will have a full 1/5 warranty, with your packing slip, and the order confirmation as your bill of sale. Please keep a copy of both for your records.
I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

At $300 new, pickings are somewhat slim for a solid sub, however that doesn't mean you choices are bad, though you may be stepping down to a smaller driver. The HSU Research STF-1 is $299 and the Onyx X-Sub is just $199. Both are 8" subs, but both have gotten some very good reviews.

Note:
I bought my current system before I got married so I spent how I wanted.
As all my components are about 5 years old, I figure I will want a complete upgrade within two years or sooner if the Receiver happens to fail.

I have a great game room 20' x 20' x 12' high.......

I had a heart to heart with my wife........and if I wait two years, she will agree to a budget of $4,000 for a new set-up.

I just spoke to JBL.......I can get a new Sub10 for $200 including tax and shipping.........I guess this will be my only option if I want to replace everything in two years....

At least my wife understands my passion......I think she is buying me a 50" DLP 1080 for Xmas.........fingers crossed........
