    hello,

i was watching the bonus disc of this film the other day and kevin smith said that GLAD, the gay and lesbian group, fined him $10,000 for the "gay" jokes in this film.

i was wondering how this was possible? does GLAD have the authority to "fine" filmmakers because they disagree with their movie? or was the "fine" a payoff so GLAD would not protest the film?

for those interested, he mentioned this in the deleted scenes part of the DVD, i think.

    thanks,
    derek

If I remember correctly, it wasn't a fine. He decided to donate the money in an effort to show good will towards the gay community. He may have called it in a fine in the deleted scenes but I think he mentions it in the commentary as well as a donation. I could be wrong about that since I haven't listened to the commentary since I bought it but I'm positive it wasn't a fine since GLAD has no legal authority to make him pay a fine.

I also believe they still protested the film.

"Now you're gonna tell me the monkey's gay?"

"Well, how do you know he doesn't smoke monkey pole?"

I was going to start a new thread about this movie anyway, but I think I'll just ask here.

My wife picked me up a used pawn shop copy of this the other day, and it seems to be in fine condition, but as I was watching Disc 2 the menus seemed weird. Whenever I would finish something, the menu wouldn't go back to the place I started from, it would almost be at random. After watching any of the TV spots for example, it would end up on the first page of Kevin Smith's bio. Anyway, I was just wondering if this was normal or not. It's not a big deal, I mean I payed $7 bucks for the disc and the movie plays fine, I'm just curious.

I hear he was also fined $5,000 from NJSA (New Jersey Slackers Association) for making it seem that all slackers in NJ are stoners and drug dealers.

No offense, but I think they made fun of everyone in that movie.

"When your finished, I want you to say "Ooh what a lovely tea party"."

    "Ooh what's a trouser snake?"

"That's bullshit, I wasn't with a hooker last night, aah ha!"

This movie has some of the best classic lines.[IMG]

It was basically a shakedown of MIRAMAX/Disney by GLAD.

Smith had already expressed more good will to the gay community than any other director at his high visibility level with "Chasing Amy." Smith was NOT happy that Miramax had to make such a "donation" after all his work, much of which is very pro-gay. He went over this in detail on "An Evening with Kevin Smith."

It angers me that the more money someone makes, the larger the target they paint on themselves for shakedowns and lawsuits, but that's beyond the scope of the discussions on this forum.

If I remember correctly, the issue GLAD had wasn't with the gay jokes, it was more about using the word "gay" to mean something bad.

I believe the line the had problems with was something like "Dude! That's SO gay!"

Where they use the word "gay" to mean "bad".
