This would be one title I'd swear, Sony that you would license out, especially since you almost never release the classic titles yourselves anymore. How about giving us some of your really GOOD Sony Pictures Classics, such as GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS, BURNT BY THE SUN, etc.?

This is a classic title??? Funnily, I just watched the DVD yesterday. Maybe they can't sublicense the Toho stuff.

Yeah, I should have clarified the post by referring to such films as "catalog" rather than (necessarily) "classic" titles. It's really a crappy movie that I saw in a theater at a Saturday matinee. Didn't like it much, and, hell, I was a kid who was supposed to like all stuff like this. But the effects are worse than cheezy and the dubbing (which I assume will be replaced by original Japanese language with English subs for this release) about as sloppy as it got back in the day. As for sublicensing, wouldn't Criterion have had to deal with Sony when acquiring a massive number of Toho films?

I saw BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE paired with 12 TO THE MOON in its original release. A great Saturday afternoon matinee that was marred when I left the theatre and found that my beloved bicycle had been stolen. But... this is on my purchase list.

Criterion didn't get any of the Sony Toho films. They got the ones previously owned by Paramount and some that keep swapping distributers.

The Sony dvd release of Garden of the Finzi Continis is OOP but the UK Arrow Films PAL dvd has a good print of the film. I did watch it a few months ago when i did my own De Sica film festival.

I'm hoping the other two, better films in that Icons DVD set (whose three DVDs were stacked on top of each other on the one spindle, groan) will also reach us. MOTHRA and THE H-MAN are superior, but BATTLE has its Toho charms.

See Randy's informative post. Criterion didn't license any Toho films from Columbia.
