I'm a big James Stewart fan, but somehow I've made it this far without ever seeing any of his westerns. I think it's time to fix that. Any recommendations? Blu-ray (I'm region free), DVD, streaming, whatever.. just looking for some good movies.

Second all of the above choices and add one - How the West Was Won - not a James Stewart western, per say, but an ensemble piece in which Stewart's character figures prominently only in the first third. Still, it's a lot of fun in all its Cinerama travelogue glory.

He's in the first section of How the West Was Won (gorgeous Blu-ray transfer of this massive Cinerama film) and is quintessential Jimmy Stewart in it. Later in the movie George Peppard (as his son) does a funny impersonation of Stewart's speech cadence.

I also recommend The Man from Laramie. Is it still available and not a sellout?

Besides the excellent recommendations for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence and The Man From Laramie. You might want to check out Destry Rides Again with Stewart and Marlene Dietrich. It's on Blu-ray in Germany from Koch and it's region-free.

I second all those Anthony Mann westerns that have been mentioned. The Mann films are Stewart's quintessential westerns IMO. Most may not be on Blu, but are worth checking out on DVD (Winchester 73, The Far Country, The Naked Spur, Bend of the River are not on Blu).

In addition to Liberty Valance from Ford, I also like Two Rode Together, which was a Twilight Time release and may be sold out.

We can only hope that THE NAKED SPUR will come from Warner Archives, and almost all the others (WINCHESTER 73, FAR COUNTRY, BEND OF THE RIVER, etc.) will eventually emerge from Universal, who have been giving us some of their back catalog lately.

Thank you guys for the recommendations!

To start, I had completely forgotten that Stewart was in How The West Was Won, so I do have one Stewart western! I should rewatch that.

Looks like Screen Archives has both The Man From Laramie and Two Rode Together, so I am gonna go ahead and order those before they disappear. I'm also going to order Man Who Shot Liberty Valance from Amazon - for under $10, that seems a steal.

I'm also gonna take a shot at Destry Rides Again - but may wait until I have a couple other things to grab from Amazon.de. The other recommendations, I'm also checking out - I see they're all available streaming online, and that some are even available in a combo DVD set from Universal that goes for only $5.

Thanks everyone, and please, if you think of any others (or any other quintessential Stewart that may or may not have fallen into the western genre) let me know. I very much appreciate the recommendations.

Furthermore, I believe Destry Rides Again might have been his first western.

Any James Stewart western is abolutely worth watching but my particular favorites are those where Anthony Mann was the director - great characterizations of a good man in very difficult circumstances who may fall into the abyss at any moment. Day one purchases if released in Hi Def - so that I can replace the dvds. Bought "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" as soon as it was available here in the US.

Regards
