Well, you can try and fabricate one yourself from raw plastic and metals.

If you want to get a patent, you need about $10K for a patent attorney.

that much? we have an idea for a device (not a kitchen gadget, consider yourself lucky, micah!) that we are looking to get a patent on. $10k is rough.

Getting the patent is just the beginning. Then, you have to get it to market. Usually, some manufacturing company will offer to buy the product outright for a pitance. Then, they own it and make all the money. Or, if you have the nerve, you can mortgage the house, or 50,000 units and hope they sell.
    Good luck

You probably missed the boat on that new show on ABC about the next big Invention (created by Simon Cowell, I think).

A patent agent would be cheaper, but even a patent attorney in private practice would be less than 10K. Make some calls and get some quotes. Make sure you get the price for patent application preparation and prosecution of the patent application.

Stay away from the inventor companies.

Shoot me a PM if you have any questions, as I am a patent attorney.

Go to the library and check out a book on patents - there are dozens of them, many of which include forms and detailed filing instructions. You don't need an attorney to do a basic patent filing, although you'll certainly want one when it comes time to market the idea. You can also get plenty of information at the U.S. Patent Office website (!) Even more than you'll find on the Home Theater Forum. [IMG]

There's a Book called Patent it Yourself from Nolo Press, which you may want to purchase. Here's the link.

    Good luck!!

    Good luck with invention.

I've thought of some interesting ideas before, but I have done nothing about it. I hope it works for you, and it's a good thing you were not specific about what it was on here, you never no if someone would have jumped the gun with their $10k. [IMG]

Wait until you see what I charge as a patent attorney. That Nolo press book is a real bargain. Especially since it's available in most libraries.

[rant]Do not discuss your actual invention in public. Discuss it only with your co-inventor, and persons that have a duty to keep confidential (e.g. a patent attorney, investors who have signed a non-disclosure agreement, etc.)your invention. If you make a public disclosure of your invention before filing an application, you will have WAIVED any foreign patent rights.[/rant]

And that was some incredibly valuable advice that you just got free of charge from a patent attorney. Follow it. [IMG]

Wow, a $40+ dollar book is "ridiculously expensive"??
You may want to invent something for the headache you're going to get after seeing the bill from the patent attorney. [IMG]
