Went to BB today at lunch to purchase the EE of Fellowship of the Ring (the standard edition, not the gift edition).
I was in line - and they had to have a line watcher, and those annoying pole-chains you usually see in banks due to the crowd - and saw that they are, at least for today, selling Episode II for $10!!
I jumped out of line, grabbed a copy, and went back to line. Up til today, I had no intention of buying Ep II - I enjoyed it, but I'm not really a SW enthusiast. But when I saw it was only $10 - the movie geek in me could not resist.
Now I just have to explain to the Homeland Budgetary Committe* why I overspent today.
*the wife.

Michael-

First of all, stores are losing money on the EP2
DVD at $9.99, so I wouldn't feel too bad about spending
the money. That DVD will NEVER be cheaper to purchase
new.

Secondly, my "out" for my DVD spending habits is good
old eBay. I just thinned out my collection of DVDs on
there, and in many cases I sold my USED DVDs for more
than I paid for them.

At the moment, barring super obsure titles, like
"All The Vermeers in New York," I find that I can
recover a lot of money spent on DVDs that were
impulse buys in the first place.

If you don't watch it, sell it.

Then, the spouse cannot complain too much.

Mark--

The whole post was supposed to be fairly tongue in cheek.

Apologies if that was not clear. I've already talked to my wife and she's fine with the purchase. However, I will consider eBay as a source for buying movies - hadn't really thought about it.

For me, it's just funny as I become more and more an HT enthusiast - my next big technology purchase will be a home theater system so I can finally hear DD/DTS tracks. I was laughing more at myself, because I never intended to buy Episode II, and there I was, buying it!

Yep, Michael...I got it. :)
Just thought I'd offer some "anxiety advice" as somone
who is now refered to as "our local family DVD rental outlet." :b
Actually, wouldn't this purchase, technically,
make you a "DVD Slut" or "DVD 'John'"?
But yeah, "whore" sounds better.
;)
Regards,
Mark

I just ran and purchased my copy of Episode II after reading this post... what does that make me?

I'm happy to say I got it for $9.99 and they threw in a free Star Wars calendar... that took the edge off of my impulse buy.

Now if I can just make it through the rest of the day without leaving early to watch it.

My story is worse, I think (but at least I don't have to justify my purchases to a wife).

I was at Target and I saw they had Spider-Man on sale for 17.99. I hadn't planned on buying the DVD (liked the movie, just not that much).

But wait! On the package is one of those peel off coupons for $3.00 off a 12-pack of Dr. Pepper. Considering that Target was selling Dr. Pepper for just over three bucks, that's practically free!

Thus, I bought a DVD I hadn't planned on buying, just for free Dr. Pepper.

Never fear,

You don't reach the "whore" status until you start buying sub-par transfers that aren't anamorphic or aren't OAR.

As long as it's a nicely mastered/transferd 16x9 OAR disc without a lot of distracing EE...because of your selectivity and high standards you should consider yourself a hi-end call-girl / escort!

What the hell? You've been a member here for two years, and you don't have a surround setup???

It's not so bad now, but just wait till you wake up tomorrow and find that what you thought was AOTC the night before is really Freddie Got Fingered. ;) :D

Thank goodness for EBay. Because of it, I don't mind upgrading to the next 2nd or 3rd special edition.:D

Impulse buys are my downfall. They rarely happen in a brick and mortar store, it's the damn Internet I blame for my DVD promiscuity.

I am weak....so weak...

It's a matter of money and space. For the last couple of years, it's more been a matter of space. My house was built in the 1920's, and the layout of the living room is extremely frustrating as far as trying to figure out where to put the speakers, TV, etc.

The best place for the TV also happens to be where there is a vent for the heat/AC. If we put even a small entertainment center there, it would effectively block most of the blowing heat/air into the room.

And don't even get me started on the cabling/wires. I have no idea how I would string the system without all the wires showing or having my daughters trip over them!
