I had my Ph.D. defense this morning, and lived to tell about it. So, now, I am D. Fischer, Ph.D.
You might expect me to be excited, but mostly I could use a nap... or watch some movies... [IMG]

Congrats! It must be a huge relief to be done with the defense. Help yourself with your favorite adult beverage, kick back, and just savor the moment.

Dave, congratulations, indeed. I know the feeling. I completed my Ph.D. in organic chemistry in June 1997 (U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). In fact, my defense was five years ago just this past Tuesday. Wow, how time flies! I still remember the feeling when I was done. I was more relieved than excited. By the time you get to your defense, you know you are going to make it. You just want it to be over with.
Good luck in your job search, and again, congratulations. [IMG] [IMG]

Thanks for the congrats. The best part was calling my mom -- she flipped out, shouting and screaming (and setting the dog off barking)... it was pretty funny, especially since I was sedate (emotionally drained). Mom's are great [IMG]

    Dave,
I have two degrees in chemistry and still, those molecules can be an annoying pain in the a$$. Like Michael Jordan, you can't control molecules, you can only hope to contain them. [IMG]

Congrats. I am impressed by anyone that can endure that much school. That is truly something to be proud of. ...Now if I can find the pain tolerance to endure another 2-3 years of part time grad school for a masters...

This may be a good place to ask this so here goes. On average how long is a 'typical' thesis? That would suck to have to write an entire book. Probably the number one reason I haven't gone to grad school for a masters in biology.

Thanks for the response Dr. Dave. Actually the college where I got my BS in Biology (George Mason Univ) gives grad students a choice. Either do a thesis and present/defend OR do a big research project then present the results, then you have to pass a series of written exams and pass an oral exam in front of a panel of Bio professors. I think at that point the thesis sounds like the better of the two.
