The last few months have seen some major upgrades to my home theater. I got a 65" 16x9 Mitsubishi that is incredible. Then I found a sweet deal on a Parasound HCA-2205 amp and AVC-2500 pre-pro. The improvement to music and movies with this combo has been unbelievable. A JVC XV-D723GD progressive DVD player replaces my Toshiba SD-5109(the chroma bug and frequent combing annoyed me, no one else seemed to notice though)and it does DVD-Audio as well. My SVS 20-39PC sub showed up yesterday and it is without a doubt the best sub I've ever heard and I only have it calibrated by ear so far! I demo'd Iron giant, U-571, Matrix, and Unbreakable.
And if that wasn't enough, a brand new pair of B&W 604's should be arriving today sometime to complete the 600 series system(I have 602's and a LCR-6 center currently) and my Home Theater is DONE! I'll have to update my web page now.
I'm so happy(sniff).
Thanks,
rin
PS. Anyone wanna come over and watch a movie?

I`m looking into the Parasound 2205 amp, but not into spending $$ for new. Can you tell me what you paid for the "sweet" deal? I don`t mean to sound nosey but I just want to know what to expect out there on the used market. (i`m assuming you got your`s used) thanks

Congrats, I have been using an AVC-2500/HCA-2205A/HCA-1500A combination for quite some time now. Very nice! :)

.
I have to thank my wife though, seems that they're not all quite as understanding as she is I'm finding out.
BTW, John, how do you do side surrounds with the 2500? I'm assuming you have an add on processor that I missed on your website?
Thanks again,
rin

rin,
I used Parasounds
CSE 6.1 processor for while.
I now just split the AVC-2500's left and right rear surround outputs to both power amps. The 2205 drives the sides and the 1500 drives the rears. I use the input gains on the 1500 to attenuate the signal to compenaste for rear and side speaker distance to the listening position discrepancies. I calibrate the sides and rears independently to 75 dB SPL and then reset together.
My surrounds produce a very strong and anchored "phantom" center rear channel. I found my configuration worked just as well eliminating processor noise.
12)* What if I don't have a THX Surround EX compatible setup?* Can I still play Dolby Digital Surround EX encoded DVDs?
*
Yes.* Even if your home theater is not equipped for Surround EX, the encoded surround back information is still contained in the l/r surround channels and will be played back accordingly.* That is; in-phase and equal information representing the surround back EX channel sound information will be output by the l/r surround speaker arrays (ie a 'phantom rear center'.)

John,
why did you stop using the CSE 6.1? I was thinking about getting one. Does it do a decent job? If you could enlighten me I would appreciate it.
thanks,
rin

rin,
The Parasond unit is a repackaged Smart CS-3X Jr.™
It adds a remote for calibration and simple control. They have eliminated the speaker level inputs found on the Smart unit.
The unit worked well. I found it added a bit to much S/N hiss to the rear surrounds.
