Sorry I haven't got a photo of it to show you as it had been knocked down when I went back the following day. However, how about a road sign saying that the road ahead is narrowed because of an obstruction in the road? That's fine, you might think ... but the only obstruction in the road is the road sign.

There's a series of billboards that say something to the effect of:
Why are looking up here instead of the road?

It's meant to cause awareness to work zones, but the billboards effectiveness is definitely it's undoing.

It's almost like using spray paint to make a sign that says:
    Stop Fluorocarbon Emmisions!

My favorite in England is from some years ago (early 70s) when I encountered road signs reading:

Oncoming Vehicles in Middle of Road

This turned out to be a reference to the practice of passing in the center of the road.

I was in England a few years back and we saw a sign that said, "No Tipping" and we all thought that was pretty funny until our English friend we were visiting told us when we arrived at his place that the sign meant no littering.

    My personal favorite:

    Landscaping Ahead

And this isnt going from the desert to the rainforest type of road, there's greenery all along these roads you see these signs on and all of a sudden....Landscaping Ahead.

And let's, just for a moment, assume that you were driving right out of the desert and into an area that had trees and bushes and such along the road...
does that make the sign any more important/interesting ?

There is a sign on the NYS Thruway south of the Woodbury Tolls on the way to NJ and the Ramapo Rest area. It's a blue sign with white lettering that says:

    "Last Area on Thruway"

Makes me think if I am going into a black hole", the Void?, Nirvana? [IMG]

I've always thought a "Yield" sign on the same pole as a " Railroad Crossing" to be fairly redundant. (and silly)

The stupidest sign I ever saw was a "detour" sign. Not that the sign itself, but it's placement. The highway department was repairing a main road and the detour sign was sending traffic down a deadend street. Talk about a traffic jam.

Are you sure the sign didn't mean they were landscaping ahead? Ie., look out for a mowing team. I've seen similar signs around here for mowing teams along the interstate.

I got one... "Caution: Men working in trees". They were trimming trees to that they did not hit the powerlines.

    James,

More than likely that was the intention the sign which was left up long after the crew had departed, which then makes it seem really silly.

I have never seen the landscapers and I want to say its a permanent sign when I have seen it...
