I have a fairly new (bought in September of 2002, sole owner) Saturn SL2. Whenever I drive it for longer than just a few minutes, I noticed a sound when I have turned the car off and am walking away.

It's a "tick tick tick" sound - I've heard it before on other cars, and always attributed it to the car cooling down.

Is it normal for cars - new or old - to have these kinds of "settling" sounds after driving? Or is it a sympton of building problems?

It's cooling down--thermal contraction. All cars (and anything else that heats up or cools down) do this.

They do this while warming up too--thermal expansion--but you can't hear it over the engine noise.

My 93 Saturn has done the same thing since I bought it new. It's normal.

Ever been in a barn with a tin roof on a hot day when a cloud passes overhead? Kevin hit the nail on the head. Thermal contraction. Dont give it a second thought.

I wonder, however, why some cars do this more than others? I've never heard it on any of my vehicles. However, every Subaru I've been around has done it. Seems to be more prevalent on 4 cylinder engines...

Thanks to all for the reassurance that an explosion is not going to happen!

I was fairly sure it was a normal sound/phenomenon, but wanted to be very sure.

I've never met a Saturn that didn't do this. My new 2003 Vue makes the same sound after shut-off.
