I don't really know much or anything at all about this but here is my situation:

Samsung Full HD Tv connected to DVD player via HDMI....

I have 2 speakers (really good ones) but the receiver is broken... they use monster cables..

So basically I need a receiver that allows my tv AND dvd sound to come out these speakers I have... obviously in stereo sound....

So i'm thinking i would keep the dvd and tv connected via HDMI and the TV and DVD would each connect to the receiver via the digitial audio out?

I don't have a big budget (300-500$ australian dollars) so i was thinking of 1 of these products:

Yamaha Music Australia - Audio Visual - Stereo Amplifiers / Tuners / Receivers

Sherwood RX4109 STEREO R/C 100WX2

If there is a more optimum way for me to hook up all the components or a more appropriate receiver? I would appreciate the advice.... thanks!

Na, the TV has a built in digital and HD tuner... its brand new...

So anyway I am now thinking of this 5.1 receiver with HDMI:

Yamaha Music Australia - Audio Visual - Stereo Systems

So could I use that receiver with just 2 speakers for now? and add more later? or do i need 5 speakers + sub for that receiver?

How would i then hook up everything with that receiver...?

Yes, it is a very simple hookup. The Yamaha 363 would do what you are looking to do.You could use just two speakers for now if you wish. Just go into the speaker setup menu in the Yamaha and turn off the center and surround speakers.

Even though you don't have a subwoofer, I'd suggest you leave it turned on and set the crossover to 40 or 60 just to protect your front speakers. Movies and tv shows nowdays have lots of deep bass in them and it might damage your two speakers if they receive a full range signal.

Just so you know, the 363 only passes video via hdmi, not audio.

Ok thanks I get it all now...

I think the speakers would be ok with deep bass I mean they were originally designed to play off music CD's.. theyre from 1983 back when subwoofers and 5.1 sound didn't yet exist.

I'm worried that sub 20hz signals didn't exist either! You speakers may not be able to handle the depth charge scene on U-571 for example. Be careful with that volume knob
