Hi,

I just got DTV installed at my house and we purchased a 56" HDTV. I have a HDMI cable running from the DTV box to the TV. However, my brother just brought over his surround sound system. The thing is, there's only component cables. Am I able to hook it up so the sound comes from the surround sound, and the video comes from the HDMI cable?

Thanks, Jonathan

Component cables are video only.
You can run the HDMI straight to the tv for video, and a digital coax or optical from the DTV box to the surround receiver. If the only inputs the surround receiver has for audio is the red & white analog inputs, the best you'll get is Pro Logic, which is most channels will be anyway. The only channels that broadcast in 5.1 surround, are HD channels, some premium movie channels (HBO, Starz, etc.), and some PPV channels.

Yeah, the only cables are the red & white ones. If I'm on HD channels, will it still be surround sound, or just normal sound coming from multiple speakers? Not sure the difference between 5.1 and the rest.

If you set the receiver to Pro Logic, it will be surround, but not real 5.1 surround. Pro Logic will take a stereo signal (which is all you're getting) and matrix it into 5.1 speakers, so it's simulated surround.

No way to get real 5.1 surround from a stereo connection............. Sorry.
What is the brand and model number of your surround system?

It's probably 10 years old... Pioneer CX-790, M-790, PDF-505... basically I just want to make sure if I do indeed get it setup, it's not just the same sound coming from every speaker.
