Is the Sherwood 6108 or 7108 an upgrade over my Sony STR-SL7?

I recently upgraded from Sony mico-speakers and a Sony sub. to larger Sony bookself speakers and a Klipse 8" sub.

Now I know these are not the best speakers, but the price was right and they do sound a ton better than the micro speakers.

Now I am wondering if I can impove my SQ with an inexpensive Sherwood receiver (which I have heard good things about).

Everything I hear about my Sony STR-SL7 is not-so-good. So I guess my question is simple:

Is the $100-175 Sherwood a better receiver than my $300 Sony?

    And one more noob question:

Does DD-EX and DTS-ES sound better than 5.1 when I am still using only 5 speakers (and a sub)? (My system is in a bedroom, so more speakers are out of the question)

Jefe- IMO, no. The Sherwood may be very good in the under $200 range but, everything is relative. If you find something in the same price range as the Sony that you like better, then that would be an upgrade. Stay with what you have now then spend the apropriate amount of money for a "true" upgrade later.
