I can't seem to find this DVD anywhere!!

Wasn't it only released last year and was this a limited edition or something? Is there any reason this is not widely available and most retailers are either sold out or no longer carry it?

    Please help!

The Special Edition or regular movie-only version?

I've tried everywhere, I'm gonna have to resort to Ebay soon...

Thanks Rob, but that is not the SE which further supports my assumption that this DVD has been discontinued...

I recently rented this from Netflix. It was a single disc (flipper) with a few extras (not much I recall). Just before it shipped, I got an email from Netflix saying that the title was out of print and may have a long wait. At that time, they started to show a new version of The Producers as an upcoming release. I would guess that with the success of the Broadway version, and the talk of a film version of the musical that they may be re-issuing this title.

Thanks Eric, I guess I should hold out than. I really hope a full-blown SE is reissued sometime this year.

It's a bit of a shame, because I like The Producers: SE. The main extra on the disc is a very good 1 hour long documentary about the making of the movie, with some great anecdotes. Hopefully that will be retained for any new edition.

The movie isn't just being talked about - it's been announced, casting is proceeding. It looks like its an interesting mix of the original broadway cast and a couple of additional name stars - Nicole Kidman as Ulla, Will Farrell as Franz Liebkind. (I have to say, I have difficulty seeing either of these two in these roles, but I will be happy to be proved wrong.)

I hope so. I haven't really seen him in too much, and so I really can't comment. I'm just remembering Kenneth Mars, and the way he had a real physical dominating presence, that was really quite scary. I liked that, and I cannot see Will Farrell contributing that. But it is a different film, it will be a different portayal of the character, and hopefully he does well.

For some reaon, I'm more worried about Nicole Kidman as Ulla. But we'll see.

I think his style of humor may be too goofy for the part.

    Too goofy? Franz Liebkind?!

My favorite scene from the original is when they're on the roof trying to talk him into selling the play to them and Liebkind goes into some sort of Nazi song/anthem... watching that alone is funny enough, but Gene Wilder's reaction of almost losing it during that take is even more entertaining.

There's a new release coming on December 12th:

    The Producers: Deluxe Edition

Besides being a two-disc set, I have no other information.

    According to DVD Answers:
So, just from memory, it looks to me like the original release spread out over two discs rather than one DVD-18, and with a brief promo short for the new film.

    Thanks for the info, Matthew.[IMG]

I saw the 2 disc SE on the coming soon page at
DVD Planet's website, and I was curious about
it. I already have the original flipper DVD with
the documentary, so I will keep it and pass on
    the double-dip.
