Ouch. Just bought the current version over the holidays. I'll have to look out for more details.

Ok, I will try to post again since I posted with a link and it said I couldn't do that and to press back and my message would be retained, but it wasn't!
According to a website I go to, the BAR, the .30 caliber Browning MG, the Russian Mosin-Nagant, and the Russian DP MG all are .30 caliber, but the bullet is 7.62mm. This forum won't let me post a link because apparently I am a n00b. So I don't know how reliable that info is, and I am no expert...

Yes but its not really a fair comparison to the DD. The DTS is a new mix. I was actually going to pick this up since I have it on Laserdisc so I will wait for this edition.

IF the DTS is the same as the original DVD, then it will be incredible. It IS that much better than the DD track.

When you say 7.62mm that is roughly the closest metric size to .30 cal (.30 inches). It's the nominal bullet diameter. But the length, weight, and shape of the bullets may be quite different. Plus what is packed is not bullets per se but rather cartridges. The .30-06 was used in US WWI and WWII rifles, the .303 British in WWI and WWII rifles, and the 7.62 by 54R in the Russian Mosin-Nagants. After the war various Western armies adapted the .308 Winchester round, calling it the NATO 7.62. The Russians used the 7.62 by 39 round in the AK-47 and SKS rifles.

Here's a photo of some of them:

I would like to see a new Jaws myself. I think having the extras on a separate disc could even improve the transfer more (not that it looks bad now).

Special Features aside, I already own the DTS version should I bother getting this new version?

Hey... how many editions of SPR are we meant to buy? There are already rumours of a 3 disc Extreme edition for 2005 and a 4-disc Ultimate Edition for 2006 followed by a [STOP IT STEVE!] ;)

Great war film, I may just buy it again, for the last time, I hope.

I do not think that that release is the same as this one. Looking at Amazon.co.uk I see that there was a 2-disc DTS edition released last September in Region 2, but it only added one new special feature so far as I can tell ("Return to Normandy"), whereas it seems to me that they have created all-new extras and special packaging for this new R1 version. Am I wrong?

This will have to go into my 'special packaging' section in my DVD collection. Damn snappers going with snappers, amaray with the amaray...

Why? Aside from the cover, we do not really know what the packaging will be like. It could just be a regular 2-disc amaray case that only "looks" like an ammo box.

Well, I'm saying if it IS specialised packaging it'll go in the particular 'appointed' section. I hope it's an amaray 2-discer... I'm gonna buy it anyway! ;)

BTW, here is the art for the R2 edition (released back in Sept. 2003), which I think looks very classy:

Wish they could use that teaser poster image for the new R1 cover art instead of the big head syndrome all the time!

I gotta wonder about this new DTS track. Somebody mentioned in this thread that the previous DTS version was enocded at half the rate, which makes little sense to me as none of the extras where on the DTS version.

^That's cool then. As long as the experience is the same. I've wanted to update my DD version to DTS for so long, but with this new 2 disc coming out, might as well get that and not miss out.

Paul,
That's the logic I would use. The only iffy is that they might just copy the DD track and put it into the DTS encoder basically making no difference IMHO. If they use the old DTS master for the DTS track then you shouldn't be disappointed. It's stellar.
