I watch press updates from Governor Cuomo here in the NYC area.

I get a sense of real leadership from this man. He tells it like it is without being self-congratulatory or pretending to be an expert.

One thing I found out is the price gouging companies are charging NYC for the N95 masks. They cost $.80 apiece to make. They are charging NYC hospitals anywhere from $4-$7 per mask. In a time like this, companies feel the need to price gouge when it comes to saving people's lives.

Cuomo is generally good in a crisis but he does have a blind spot, and that’s New York City’s Mayor de Blasio. The two men hate each other personally and professionally. Normally, it doesn’t matter when they’re arguing over stuff that’s inconsequential. But in this case, they need to be working together better than they are. The city needed to be shut down days earlier than it was, but because de Blasio said it first, Cuomo had to argue instead of just doing it. It got done anyway but how much critical time was lost to their bickering?

I watched Governor Cuomo's press conferences for the past days. I don't know. For days and days I saw him playing with words, at least on 4-5 different days that we will not quarantine, it's a scary word, no shelter-in-place, no we will not shut down, on and on and on. Just do it on the first day. Today he was complaining people playing basketball. I don't know what's the situation there. Have they issued a complete shut down? Issue a shut down and then if they come out, complain. Like in Europe, they should fine people who don't respect it.

Tue, Mar 17
Cuomo: “No city in this state can quarantine itself without state approval and I have no interest whatsoever, and no plan whatsoever, to quarantine any city.”

I read that the producers of Grey's Anatomy are donating many of the real medical props they use on the show to local hospitals in the LA area, such as exam gloves, masks, and "scrubs."

That’s the point Ive been trying to make. This is a virus that can take up to 14 days before you feel symptoms, and for a lot of people, the symptoms are mild enough that they don’t realize you have it.
That I might have had it and not even known is what's messing with my head. It's selfish but I want to know if I had it so I could relax a little. I mean I'm not going to walk around the town and potentially spread it to people (and I won't be walking anywhere soon because Philadelphia has issued a stay at home order so I imagine that the suburbs & the whole state will be shut down by mid-week or so) but like I said, if I've had it, I'd calm down.

They’re working on a test to check for antibodies - that test won’t tell you if you’re currently sick or about to be sick, but it will tell you if you’ve already recovered from it. From what I read it seems possible that that test could be made more widely available in the coming weeks, separately from the test they’re doing now to confirm live virus. So I think at some point you’ll be able to do that.

It may actually prove to be an essential step to restarting everything. People who have cleared the virus, if the science ends up proving what they hope which is that (hopefully) you can only get it once, will be needed to help get everything else up and running. We might be walking around with those papers on our way to work in the way that porn stars bring STD test results to each new job.

Read about that on Friday.

Seems there are multiple such (serologic) tests in development or FDA approval phase — and as usual, FDA approval takes significant time... even after they recently relaxed the process. Some are apparently already in use in China and parts of Europe.

And these tests seem to work fairly quickly and don’t seem to need to be processed in labs.

I thought I read you can get this virus strand more than once.

From what I've read, there's no proof of that... just small number cases where the evidence is essentially inconclusive, eg. not clear if those patients ever actually fully recovered before getting sick(er) from it again.

For our sakes, I hope it's proven that you can't get it more than once, but I have a feeling that's going to be wishful thinking on my part.

Just out of curiosity, am I technically breaking the law to go for a walk in New York State?

I'm a night owl and usually walk late at night. The only human activity I come across on my walks in this rural small village are an occasional automobile when crossing the state highway in front of my house to get to the public school grounds across the street that I walk around.

I'm just curious if it's actually legal. I'm obviously not at risk of contracting or spreading it on these walks since it all happens with no human contact, but I also don't want to get in trouble.

Leo, it sounds like that is fine according to this info:

~~~~
https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-signs-new-york-state-pause-executive-order
From the 10-point NYS on PAUSE plan in the link above:
4. When in public individuals must practice social distancing of at least six feet from others
6. Individuals should limit outdoor recreational activities to non-contact and avoid activities where they come in close contact with other people
~~~~~

From "Matilda's Law" for those 70 years or older:

Can go outside for solitary exercise

Always stay at least six feet away from individuals

~~~~~
https://www.lohud.com/story/news/20...ions-new-york-list-new-rules-know/2876222001/
All New York residents
  • All New York residents must stay home "to the maximum extent possible," effective 8 p.m. Sunday, March 22, according to Cuomo.
  • New Yorkers can leave their homes for solitary exercise or to obtain essential services or items, including trips to the grocery stores. When in public, they must keep a six-foot distance from others.
Despite “strong lungs” and a “healthy lifestyle,” the champion called COVID-19 “by far the worst virus I’ve ever endured.”
