Is it better to lower/raise the sub volume or the sub preamp out vol. for LFE calibr.

Wondering if setting the preamp to say +8 on the sub outs and then adjust from there when calibrating or max the volume on the sub itself and work from there. Anyone get varying results by driving the amp in the sub harder? WIll this be harmful to the amp??

We had a long thread about this a few months back.

For an AV receiver, the decision was to fix the LFE output way low (like -7, -8) and use the INTENSITY/VOLUME knob on the sub to level-adjust.

The deciding factor was a report that showed that many receivers produced 1-5% distortion on the LFE port as the internal level number went up. This included some flagship receivers.

(No, you cannot perceive this ammount of distortion at subwoofer frequencies. The report had to use measureing equipment.)

So I would imaging the same thinking applies for a Preprocessor setup.

    Hope this helps.
