Is it a good idea to get high end gear online?

    Hi all,

I'm looking to get a new Arcam amplifier (Diva A90) and they're too damn expensive in Australia.

I was thinking I could get one directly from the UK.

    Is it a good idea?

    Any drawbacks?

    Which site would you suggest?

    Thanks.

Does the UK and Australia even have the same household curent? I ask you to consider this now before you get a device with a funny shaped plug.

But yes, some of us live in backwater settlements and can only get good gear via the internet. Just be sure that the company you deal with is an authorised dealer and has a good return policy.

Or if not authorized, know that, but also be aware that you might get an even better deal. You only have to justify to yourself the extra cost.

I'm not sure about their amp, but I know their receiver is actually an OEM'd asian model that they've not made a secret of. You might want to dig a little (email them?) to find out if the amp you're interested in is also. To me anyways, if that's the case, it would seem a bit much to pay a premium for s/h on top of the price for something that's pretty close to where you are. Sometimes a little digging turns up the same thing in one's own backyard. BTW, you Aussie's have got some pretty good companies over there!

I'm considering buying an Arcam directly from the UK because for reasons I don't know, Arcam prices are extremely inflated in Australia.

Example: Arcam's Diva A85 integrated amplifier retails in the UK for -
    800 Pounds = 1900 Aus Dollars = 1400 US dollars.

It retails in Australia for -
    1200 Pounds = 2900 Aus Dollars = 2100 US Dollars.

    That's a big difference.

Why should I pay such a huge amount extra?

    What's the story here?

Buy a Plinius integrated instead much better all-around and is probably pretty close in price to the Diva since it is a Kiwi product.

There are some other pretty good Australian amp manufacturers:
    Perreaux
    Supratek (excellent tube gear)
    Redgum Audio
