If I remember correctly this was an early DVD release. Anyone know if it's anamorphic?
    thanks,

It was not an early DVD release but it was released when Paramount decided to not produce Anamorphic DVD's anymore. SO no it is not anamorphic. Paramount has changed there minds again and started releasing anamorphic titles.

Everything Josh said is true... however, the transfer is one of the best non-anamorpic transfers I've ever seen. Truly remarkable. The soundtrack is excellent as well.

The movie is not anamorphic, but, strangely, the static menu is.
I found the soundtrack a little harsh, but it's bombastic - so if you're into loud bangs, it's one for you.
Can't remember how good the video transfer was.
Great movie, and it's one I'd repurchase in a heartbeat should it get revisited.

If you have access to region 2 then you will get an anamorphic transfer

An interview was on Darkhorizons that this film would be rereleased sometime next year with lots of footage added in. Plus commentary. A

I have both the R1 and R4 (same as R2) discs of this film, and the transfers are far from identical. The anamorphically-enhanced R4 version is a significant improvement.

Assuming that re-release rumor is true, this could mean a surfacing of the
infamous "director's cut" of EH, from which I'v eheard a substantial
amount of footage was cut prior to theatrical release.(almost an hour)
    I've also heard
that major changes were made at the last possible moment to the story,
altering the entire subject and tone of the film. I recall reading
    several
articles about EH before it was released where the plot was universally
described as somewhat different than what the movie had (a more complex
ghost story, nothing about "hell" added in).

As for a release of a Directors cut, well, if you own the DVD then you own the Directors cut. Paul Anderson has stated that he prefers the theaterical cut to his original cut of the film. As backing up my statement of a SE coming out, I forget the date but it was on Darkhorizons.com. It was either R2 or R4 that was just about to be released and he was upset he couldn't do a commentary cause he was busy with Resident Evil, but that sometime in 2002 there would be a SE released.

What about the new Region 3 anamorphic DVD? Hivizone.com has it listed (currently out of stock).
They also have Region 3 versions listed for PLANET OF HE APES (original) and TRUE LIES.

As far as I know the R2 and R4 are NOT identical. The R4 has English, Spanish, French and Italian tracks whereas the R2 has English, German, Hungarian and Czech (not so sure about the last two, but it isn't Italian and French!).
