Is 720p Capability Necessary? Mitsu TV's? (1 Viewer)

I've keep reading more and more about this topic and now I'm completely confused. Final question on this topic...Is it true the Mitsubishi WS-65311 does not accept a 720p input? However, most DVD players out there only output 420p right? Is this going to cause more problems in the future for me? I haven't take delivery of the TV yet, so I'm trying to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Now with HDTV, the HDTV receiver would convert/downgrade the 720p signal to a 1080i. Would this even be the case with Mitsubishi?

No, Mitsubishis will not accept a native 720p through the DTV inputs.

Yes, the receiver will do the converting to 1080i. The only likely scenario for a problem is with an XBOX, as discussed in one of your other threads.

No DVD players put out a 720p signal, they put out 480i or 480p if they are progressive. There's really nothing to worry about with the Mits 720p issue, as long as you're aware of the few XBOX games.

My Toshiba 57HX81 is not supposed to support 720p, but when I output 720p with my HTPC or X-Box, it down converts it to 540p.

There are DVD players that output 720p and 1080i. The two I'm aware of are a Samsung (HD1000?) and Bravo D1.

dvd players that output 1080i????? What dvds are in 1080i??? I thought all dvds were in 420p if you have a progressive player and no more than that is available except through hdtv television.

I was replying to the statement "No DVD players put out a 720p signal...". There are players that output a 720p and 1080i signal (and other formats). I don't know of the format on the DVD disc itself, I always thought it was 480 something.

You're right, I shouldn't have said that NO players put out a 720p display.

I think these 720p and 1080i units just have a built in scaler. Faroudja (sp?) put out a player recently as well that has a scaler built into the player... probably MUCH better. Anyways, I don't think these player are now or ever will be the norm. It isn't a new technology per se, and I don't think they'll be widely adopted.

However, since many people own a 1080i display I think that's what these scaling DVD players will have to put out if they are going to be widely accepted. I can't imagine going from 480i to 480p to 720p to a display that will convert it to 1080i or 540p or something like that is going to look fantastic... too much manipulation. I'm happy to stick with 480p right now.

In other words, the fact that there is A DVD player available that converts 480i to 720p, shouldn't discourage anyone from buying a display not capable of 720p.

Well my tv is capable (i dont know how or what plug/connection but it is) of 720p and if there is a 720p player capable then i want it. Will it only put out 720p if the dvd is recorded in 720p or will it work with all dvds?????? Does it upconvert 420p?????Thanks for the info.

I would suggest doing a search over at www.avsforum.com there are a lot of posts/interest on these players. There is also another player that reportedly just started appearing at stores, the Samsung 931.
