What are the differences between Iron core and air core inductors, besides the obvious fact that the iron core inductors have a piece of iron in the center? Also, are litz wire inductors really better than solid wire inductors? Besides the fact that the litz wire ones bend easier I feel the solid wire ones are easier to work with and their cheeper. Anyone?

Iron core inductors are usually used in low pass filters (woofers) because you can get over-saturation effects as the frequency goes over 1KHz or so (maybe up to 1.5KHz, I forget). Air core inductor are preferred for use in high pass filters (midrange/tweeters). Also, since comparable inductor values for air core inductors used for low pass filter are more expensive than their iron core counterparts, some folks will cut costs and use iron core inductors for the low pass filter.

I hear no difference between wire and foil inductors.
