I'm most likely going to be getting an iPod over the coming weeks, but am left wondering, what's the difference between the two. The Best Buy Canadian website has both listed, for the exact same price, and after comparing the two in specs, the only major difference I can find is the Apple one weighs 2 grams lighter. Other than that they look identical. Does it have to do with warranties? Please help me out.

I believe HP has a longer warranty. I thought they weighed the same, since I thought the HP iPod is just the iPod with HP's logo on it instead.

Both are fabbed by the same company (Elite Group), both are just programmed with -slightly- different firmware (to say "HP" or "Apple") otherwise, the units are identical.

The iPod +HP's can be found for less money online than the Apple version. Other than the HP logo on the back of the player, they are identical. I went with the HP version because of the lower price -- I paid $347 at buy.com about a month ago for a 40GB player.

Chris, I don't think that there is even a difference in firmware as it is the Apple iPod sold by HP (yeah, I don't get it either). As others have noted, a better warranty and slightly lower price can be found on the HP boxed unit.

The best best prices and warranties can usually be found by going to your local Costco and getting their lifetime guarantee. I'm not a Costco member, but supposedly it if ever breaks or get damaged, they will replace it or refund your money.

    From what I've heard:

HP iPod = comes with software for PC only
Apple iPod = comes with software for PC and MAC

Doesn't matter I guess since any software you need is online anyway. AFAIK they have the same warranty: 1 year.

I just bought a 40gb Apple brand at Amazon. They were having a sale; $367 shipped.

Best Buy's American site lists them as the same weight, and so does Amazon. However, Best Buy Canada uses grams, so maybe there is a difference when you use smaller measuring units.

Get your iPod from Costco and you'll get a warranty for life.
