This now baffles me. Come on Apple. I can understand in the early days of iPhone, when there wasn't a huge body of evidence and data as to how people use their phones and what kind of physical contact they go through in an "average everyday life" of a phone, that sometimes they'd design something for aesthetics and, whoops, found out later it could scratch under normal use.

But we are many, many years into smartphones now. All manufacturers should know what sort of normal day-to-day contact they'll have with other things that can be in peoples' pockets. Keys, change, wallets, etc. There's no excuse to not making a moderately scratch-proof case these days, by Apple or by any other smartphone manufacturer. I'm just talking about normal wear and tear, not abuse or drops.

Oh man, now that I hear that it's the screen, that makes this even worse. I thought it was the back paint job. Aren't they always bragging about "the newest Gorilla Glass" or the "most scratch proof screen ever"? This is a step backwards, apparently, if normal use is easily scratching these screens.

Something has gone very wrong if the latest iteration of Corning's Gorilla Glass is damaged so easily. Something is wrong in the manufacturing of the glass or something is wrong with the surface coatings.

Is there any sense of whether the scratches are in the glass itself or just the surface coating?

I’m going to try to post pairs of photos. The fist will be taken with my X and the second with my good friend Steve’s 11Pro. Here goes:
